W. Hailey, serving a sentence of

army^disciplinary barracks for
the man who saved -his life on a
battlefield of of France, was
released recently by order of the
War Department.
Hailey’s life was saved at the
jfront by Thomas W. Jones, a
comrade. When Jones was tried
for,, desertion apti sentenced to
six months imprisonment, Hailey
substituted himself for Jones and
began serving the term.
Hailey told the officers at the

man to whom he owed his life in
payment of a “soldier'debt,” An
