The advocators and supporters of
Mr, 0. B. Stevens in his race for the
democratic nomination in the second
district are now posing us the only
advocates of Imnnony in the district.
They nay they ai’a crying for peace
but there is no peace, while it is pain
fully apparent to the disinterested
observer they wuiit pence only upon
their own terms.
They demand from the opposition
an unconditional surrender, which,
in itself makes harmony impossible.
They want peace provided it great
majority of the democratic purty soc-
riflee their manhood and accept a
candidate whom they had no voice in
selecting- a pretty olive branch, in
deed!
The opposition (o Mr. Stevens is
imtoral and snob us would Imvo been
expected by any body of sensible
men, and the evidence is clear tlmt
the Outhbcrt conference did expect
Ibis opposition by the clever manner
in which its members have attempted
to defeat an aggressive campaign, to
shut off any advance, against the can
didate they selected.
If those jieople are sincere in their
protestations for peace there is u rea
sonable and honorable way open to
them to secure it. If they fail to
avail themselves of it, the conse-
(|ttenoo8 rest entirely with them and
there is no power tlmt can shift the
responsibility.
As the G a with has said before
llio L'uthbert conference slould not
have named Mr. Stevens or any other
candidate. II, is a precedent with
out a parallel and without the least
shadow of excuse, They noted upon
tiie violent presumption tlmt the
democratic convention would he ulth-
or unwilling or iitdOBpelotit to deal
justly by all classes of deinocmls in
the district,
This lack of confidence has boon
justly resented and it will continue
to be resented at least until the op
position slmll Imvo their "day in
court.”

Wo notice by reference made of i!
in some of our exchanges that Editor
Winter, cl the Thumusvilh' News,
says that oui slnlnmont of his nativ
ity was a wilful falsehood coneoelod
solely for campaign purposes. Wo
admit Hint our sketch was written
for campaign purposes, but if a wil
ful falsehood ns to his nativity Ims
hccii published lie ia himself respon
sible for It.
Wo Imvo known Editor Winler
since the IMli of October, 18H1I. We
met. at the Louisville Exposition, lie
was thorp looking uftcr a ijUOO prize
bo bud won by writing and publish*
ing a sketch of some Georgia county
—perhaps Randolph; wo were there
looking after a $100 prize wo didn't
win by wilting and publishing it
sketch of Madison comity, Flu. We
confabulated together about two
hours.
During this omiversntion Editor
Winter told us, if onr memory is not
sadly nl fault, that ho was reared In
New York ami educated in u gram
mar school of tlmt city. However,
Editor Whiter ia exceedingly volu-
uble and loves to hear himself talk,
mid this Louisville statement of his
ns to Ins nativity may luve been the
ebullitions of self-esteem ov boyish
street corner praise meeting.
If Winter is a native of Georgia
we are sorry- there is no credit to
the slide in that fact in the light of
recent events. They show him to he
if not. a itm’tjiorn carpstbiigger then
a siiulhi'i'ii scnhtwiig after thu must
approved pattern. We can hardly
imagine any cireumstuucus under
which n Georgia white man, "to I lie

thn m.nanc.lions of the past few
months which Winler Ims lmd to do.
