Sheriff Swindle and posse, three in
nmnber, raided a den nf negro gam
blers at Alapaha Saturday night.
They surrounded the bouse in which
the gambling was going on, but as
soon as Sheriff Swindle showed him
self at tho door, the negroes opened
fire on him, and for a few moments
the Onbab war was as a spring zephyr
compared to a cyclone to the rattle
of artillery that followed. Finally
tbe piatolswere empty, and when the
smoke cleared away it was found that
one of tbe negroes waa dead, with
ballet through bis bressUnd another
wounded in the right arm. Fortn
nately noae of the sheriff’s posse
were hart, although several had nar
row escapes, and the Sheriff says he
felt the wind of a ball pass his ear.
There were six gamblers in the
honae, and all were captured and car
ried to Nashville eioept tbe dead
man. Ilia name was John Morphy,
and a coroner’s inqneat was held over
bis body next day. The jury return,
ed a verdict for manalaughter against
Mr. L. L. Hail, one of the party, bat
tbe case will hatdiy give him any
trouble.
Tho five gambler* were carried to
Nashville jail, and Monday Judge
Peeples gaye each of them ten
montba or ISO, except two, one of
which wax an old offender, and the
"other drew bia platol first. These
were given twelve month* each.
The eaoape of Sheriff Swindle and
bia posse waa a nairow one, and they
are to be congratulated on their'nerve
and zeal. Tbe incident will probably
give gambling a black eye in Berrien.
9100 Reward, $100.
