CITIZENS BANK,
Carrollton. Ga.
Hoke Smith has announced
his candidacy for governor of
Georgia.
This means that the Joe Brown
and Hoke Smith fight for the
governorship must be fought
over again in Georgia.
“I will be in the race for gov
ernor,” is the statement Mr.
Smith made to a number ot
newspaper reporters last Thurs
day afternoon. It was brief and
to the point, and sets at rest the
question which almost every man
in Georgia has been asking for
some time past.
Mr. H. H. Perry, of Gaines
ville, who announced lor gover
nor several weeks ago on tho
Hcke Smith platform, has with
drawn from the race and will
support Mr. Smith.
It was evidently Mr. Smith’s
intention to issue a tormal an
nouncement of his candidacy,
but the hour was late and such
documents are not easily hurried.
So he merely opened the door
into his private office, walking
into the library and saying to
the newspaper men : /
“You may say that I will be
in the race for governor this
year. Now, that’s all I want to
say iust now.”
Mr. Smith’s appearance in the
supreme court Monday morning
marks his temporary retirement
as a lawyer tor some time. It is
his purpose to lay aside the prac
tice of law until alter the primary.
In the meantime he will devote
himself to the conduct of his
campaign. It is not improbable
that the lormer governor will
manage his own campaign with
the assistance and advice ot a
committee from different parts of
the state.
Concerning Attorney General
Hart’s candidacy, it has been the
subject of comment that every
one ot the seven counties ot the
Ocmulgee circuit, over which
Judge Hart formerly presided
have always been loyal to former
Governor Smith. In his first
campaign he rolled up over,
whelming majorities in Green,
Morgan, Jasper, Jones, Wilkin
son, Baldwin and Laurens. In
his second campaign he carried
each of these counties by sub ■
stantial majorities.
Judge Hart’s candidacy will
not affect former Governor
Smith’s plans at all, it is claimed,
nor is it believed by his friends
that it will affect Mr. Smith’s
strength. It is stated by those
in a position to know that the
entrance of the third candidate
has tended only to increase the
zeal of the Smith forces and the
candidate himself.
All necessary preliminaries to
the organization ot the new rail
road company having been com.
pleted, the stockholders met last
Monday and organized under a
very liberal charter procured
several years ago.
A board of directors composed
of C H Stewart, C M Tanner, C
E Roop, C B Simonton and A
K Snead were elected and the
board has complete power and
authority to act for the company.
Since perfecting the organiza
tion this board of directors have
gone over the proposed route in
autos, and visited several towns
through which the new line will
probably run.
At Temple the board was em
thusiastically received and the
people of this little city are using
all efforts to puil the road in
their direction. At Villa Rica
the visitors made known the ob
ject of their trip and the people
of this little city are highly in
favor of the project and are anx-
ious to participate. The party
passed through Douglasville
which city is equally alive to the
project and her people lost no
time in demonstrating the fact.
From Douglasville the party
proceeded to Powder Springs
where they were heartily re.
ceived and assured ot the full
co-operation of this place. The
board was highly pleased with
the splendid progressive spirit
displayed at each place and are
confident of an early location ot
the route.
It was a wise selection on the
part of the company in placing
its interests in the hands of the
gentlemen composing this board.
They are all practical business
men and the company’s interests
could not he in oetter hands, and
it may be safely said all arrange
ments will soon be completed
lor the new road, which means a
new era of prosperity for the
people ot the splendid territory
opened up, the terminus of
which will probably be Marietta.

Automobile Bill Passed by Senate
The senate yesterday passed a
bill to require the annual regis,
tration ot all automobiles in this
state with the secretary of state.
Upon being registered and the
fee of $2 paid, each applicant
who complies with the law will
be furnished with a number. It
is made unlawful to operate
machine on the public roads
without this number being car
ried in plain view.
An amendment added to the
Slaton bill by the senate com
mittee required the proceeds of
the $2 tax to be paid into the
education fund.
The bill limits the speed at
which machines may be operated
to 25 miles an hour ; makes it il
legal for any person under 16 10
operate a machine on the public
highway ; requires lights to be
shown from sundown to sunrise
when the machine is in operat
tion; requires autoists to stop
when signaled to do so by any
driver of a draft animal; says no
intoxicared person may operate
a machine; makes violaiions
punishable as for a misdemeanor ;
and provides that the act shall
go into effect sixty days after its
passage.
Marvelous Discoveries
mark the wonderful progress of the
age. Air flights on heavy machines,
telegams without wires, terrible
war inventions to ki-1 men, and
that wonder of wonders—Dr. King’s
New Discovery--to save life when
threatened by coughs, colds, lagrip-
pe, asthma, croup, bronchitis hem
orrhages, hay fever, and whooping
cough or lung trouble. For all bron-
hitis affections it has no equal. It
relieves instantly. Its the surest
cure. James M. Black of Asheville,
N. C. R. R. No. 4. writes it cured
him of an obstinate cough after all
other remedieg faileb. 50c. and #1.
