She is Gone
Little Jennie Mae, daughter
ot Mr. and Mrs, J. C. Stallings
ol Lowell, after three weeks of
suffering from fever, died on the
22nd inst.
She was a blight and lovely
child nine years old, kind and
gentle in her manner, loved by
all, but i: pleased her Savior to
call her home where no fevers
scorch, nor pains annoy, and in
answer to his call, “She is gone
to join the number ol the loved
ones gone before.” Then dear
parents weep not, but live in
hope of a happy meeting “in
the sweet by and by.”

In all the relations of lile she
bore herself in an altitude 01 love

of honor and justice nerve en

This always excited admiration
and discovered to me the great
unselfishness ot her character.

inadequate to the energy and
ambition which seemed to satur
ate her very being and yet she
never seemed to tire in laying
her frail physical self and for the
comfort and welfare ot those she
loved Her devotion to her
home did not minify her interest
in others, but as far as her streng

to the wants of humanity about
her. Her disposition was cheer,
sulness itsels, and her greatest
satisfaction was had in helping
others she {predated the small
est kindness just as she Jforgave
the greatest wrong. She was
physically and morally brave,
she had the courage to act as
temporary substitute on the- route
from this place, as well as the
courage of conviction on any
moral question, just as occasion
might demand.
There was no better neighbor,
no truer friend, no more devoted
wife she than no mother ever
coveted the largest usefulness

years ot her invalid life on earth
were full ol plans and arrange-

Few people in Smoke Ridge
had ever seen an automobile, so
when one of those “red devils”
stopped for a few minutes in the
isolated villiage, the curious in
habitants gazed at the snorting
demon with a mixture of fear
and awe. The owner, who had
entered a store to make a nun
chase, heard one rustic remark:
“I’ll bet it is a man-killer”
•‘O’ course it is,’’ assured the
other. “Look at the number on
the back ol the car. That shows
how many people it’s run over.
That’s accordin’ to law. Now
if that fellow was to run over
anybody here in Smoke Ridge,
it would be our duty to telegraph
that number —1284— to the
next town ahead.”
“And what would they do?”
asked the auditors.
“Why, the periice would stop
him and change his number to
1285.”

His Portrait.
One of the members of a certain
suburban photographic society re
cently delivered a lecture, illustrat
ed hv lantern views. Another mem
ber, thinking to have a joke at the
expense of the lecturer, slipped in
among the slides a lantern portrait
of himself. The joke would come
in, of course, by the portrait ap
pearing on the screen immediately
after the lecturer had announced
the appearing of something quite
different. Fate and chance were
unluckily against the humorist, for
when his portrait was {'resented the
lecturer, without knowing what was
on the screen, gravely read from his
list:
“The next slide, ladies and gen
tlemen, is the picture of a refrac
tory donkey!”
The Other Way About.
A benevolent looking old gentle
man was walking along the street
when he came upon an irate parent
lecturing his offspring.
“Now, you young rascal," said the
angry father, “cut off home, and be
fore you go to bed tonight I’ll give
you a good whipping!”
The old gentleman mildly remon
strated. “My"dear sir, perhaps 1
have no right to interfere, but re
member the wise old saying, Tet
not the 6un go down upon your
wrath.’ ”
“Don’t you trouble yourself about
that,” was the reply. “I won’t do
anything of the sort. Oh, no! What
I’m going to do is to let the wrath
descend upon tbs son.’’—Judge.
