A Vagrant Become King.

Bradley, Hyatt & Co.
Everyone living in the South is
interested in cotton seed which has
Aisen from a position of obscurity
ia a period of forty years to where \
it now provides the basis of an in
dustry of international importance.
Its remarkable enhacnement in
value is not hard to understand
when its chemical analysis is taken
into consideration.
Many analyses of cotton seed
indicate that it contains about 10.3
per cent water, 3.5 per cent ash,
18.4 per cent of protein, 23.2 per
* cent of crude fibre, 24.7 per cent of
nitrogen free extract, and 19.9 per
cent of other extract or oil, In
other words, in 100 pounds of cot ton
seed there are the various percent
ages of the several materials enum
erated. As will be seen, nearly
twenty per cent of cotton consists
of oil, which when properly expres s-
ed and refined constituents one of
its most valuable products, supply
ing the housewife with an admir
able substitute for lard or other
animal fats, and enabling her to
produce cakes, rolls or biscuits of
the purest character and the finest
edible qualities as well. Through a
wise provision of nature, which man
has been slow to appreciate, this oil
consists almost entirely of carbon,
oxygen and hydrogen, three elements
which plants secure chiefly from
tlie air, and water which falls as
rain. This being the case, the oil
may be readily extracted from cot
ton seed and used for various com
mercial purposes, or as food for the
human being with the greatest pos
sible advantage from an economic
aud dietetic standpoint, while not in
^the least reducing the fertilizing
value of the seed, but distinctly im
proving it as a food material for all
classes of live stock.
This being true, it is surprising
that such a large per cent of cotton
seed is still retained on the farm
and used as fertilizer or fed directly
to cattle. Some people are still
loath to believe that the oil can
have no fertilizing value: On the
contrary, if anything has an objection
able influence when put in the soil
as it tends to close up the pores or
Lropenings between the particles of
' which the earth crust is composed,
and prevent the free movement of
air and water through the soil. With
out free movement of air and wa
ter plants cannot thrive. That oil
exercises the function described to
it when applied to the soil in con
siderable quantity is shown by the
success which has attended using it
as a medium for the protection of
roads and for the prevention of dust
in towns and cities.
Disposing of cotton seed, therefore
on a part of the farmer is a rational
and legitimate practice, provided, of
course, that he secures its fertilizing
equivalent and returns to the land
in the form of meal or some other
commercial plant food,
Considering the analysis under
discussion, it appears further that
cotton seed contains a high per
Vcent of protein. This is the element
concerned in supplying the nerves
and tissues of the animal with the
constituents for their maintenance
in perfect condition. A large amount
of it is also required in the ration
of horses and dairy cattle, since
milk contains a good deal of this

From this explanation it is not
difficult to see the important parts
which cotton seed plays now and is
destined to exercise in the future
development of the live stock indus
try of the south, and in the mainte
nance of soil fertility on that high
basis essential to the production of
maximum crops at a minimum of
cost. It is further evident that a
clear understanding of its composi
tion and the utility which the vari
ous elements serve most advantage
ously will enable the farmer to sell
it without loss of fertility and secure
in exchange materials which can
be used as food for supplying the
deficiencies of plant food in his soil.

Jackson hod occasion to censure a

On thinking the matter over at
