Redemption.
“In whom we have redemption
through his blood even the forgive
ness of sins.”
No theme that could engage our
thoughts, so profoundly interesting
as the subject which we place at
the head of this discourse because
it involves all that God in Christ
has done to save the lost and to
finally bring them home to heaven,
therefore it is worthy of our most
prayerful study.
1st As to what redemption means
and we learn at once that is a com
mercial term and means to buy or
to purchase; but not in the ordinary
way: but to redeem means more
than a simple purchase, it means to
buy back that which we have be
fore had possession of; but which
has by some means gone out of our
possession into that of some other
who under color of title has posses
sion of it so that it becomes neces
sary to pay u stipulated -price in
order to regain possession of it, by
fully satisfying the law's demands,
to illustrate, if one should neglect
to pay the taxes due on his home,
or other property, the law levies its
claim upon our home, and the home
passes from our possession to some
other: but there is provision in the
law that if we come and pay the
mount ..due with all legal cost we
may regain our home, that is re-
de3m.means to buy back that which
has fallen under the law, and over
whicli the law holds the authority
we have all fallen under the penalty
of God’s holy and "divine law, and
which penalty is eternal death,
for it is written, “The soul that sin-
neth it shall die.”
2d Now we shall see the only
way for us to get back into favor
with God, and to be made free from
the penalty of the divine law, is to
find some way by which the law
may be satisfied and we be restored
to the favor of God and there is
only limited time in which we may
be relieved from this bondage, and
that is in this life and just how
soon our opportunity may pass we
cannot know and the price of our
redemption we cannot pay, then
we can but see the great need of
some one who is able and willing

death is the penalty for sin, so only
death can pay the penalty and for
this cause Jesus came to this world
to redeem us by giving his own life
on the cross for us, therefore it is
written, “Ye are not your own ye
are bought with a price, even the
precious blood of Jesus," "For ye
are not redeemed with corruptible
things as silver and gold, but with
the prheious blood of Christ as of a
lamb without spot or blemish.”
3rd Now we see that the death
of Jesus was the only price that
could redeem us from under the
law and reconcile us therefore to
God, and by which God is reconciled
unto us, thorefore Jesus is the one,
and only mediator between God
and man and no one can come
unto God, but by him. hence by the
purchase of his own redeeming
blood, we belong to him and are
saved only by soverign grace
through him, and our reconciliation
to God can be only in this way,
and the complete victory of Jesus
made manifest in his glorious resur
rection, “For if we have been recon
ciled unto God by the death of his
son, much more being reconciled
we shall be saved by his life.”

Temperance A Health Problem.
The keynote of the new spirit in
temperance teaching was sounded
the other day by Dr. George W.
Webster, president of the Illinois
Board of Health, when he said:
“More may be accomplished by
teaching the people the truth in re
gard to the fatal effects of alcohol
upon the mental and physical
efficiency than by expatiating on
the moral wickedness of drinking:”
This is a doctrine which every
body interested in the genuine
developement of |temperance would
do well to bear in mind. Long
haired orators who come around
and grow eloquent over drunkards’
graves and blighted homes and
deserted wives may or may not do
permanent good. If drink is a sin,
then it’s a sin because it injures a
man, and if a temperance advocate
is to accomplish any permanent
good he must show just how it in
jures a man. Life insurance tables
show that the man of thirty stands
a 25 per cent better chance to live
to be seventy if he doesn’t drink—
and one demonstrated statistical
fact like this outweighs all the
eloquent generalities in “The Ten
Nights in a Barroom.”—Ex.
