Miles and Davis
Tbe Confederate veterans have
•lever had very much affection for
Gen. Nelson A. Mile*, say* the Colum
bus Enquirer. Io fact they have
long cherished a grievance against
him. In May, 1865, by order of Miles,
fetters were placed upon the feet of
Hon. Jefferson Davto, president of tbe
Southern Confederacy. This indigni
ty was oot demanded by circumetan*
cea, and it wa* apparently done for tbe
sole purpose of humiliating Mr. Davis
and bis friend*—the people of the
South. Gen. Mile* loog since recog
nised bi* mistake, aa be has endeav
ored to make It appear that he acted
under compulsory order* from the
war department. Mile* has been so
poaitive io bi* denial* that the ques
tion has remained an open one, but it
to uow settled beyond doubt, by tbe
publication of th* official order under
which Mile* acted. This order is prin
ted in facsimile in the current number
of McClure’* magaaine, in a aerie* of
article* being published in that m*ga<>
sine, over th* signaler* of Charles A.
Dana, th* aseistant secretary of war.
Here i* tbe order:
“Fortram Monroe, May 22, 1865.
Brevet Major General Mile* i* hereby
authorised and directed to place man
acle* and fetter* upon tbe band* and
feet of Jefferson Davi* and Clement C.
Clary, Jr., whenever be may think it
advisable in order to render their im
prisonment more secure.
"By order of the secretary of war.
“C. A. Dana, Asst. Sec. of War.”
This order is convincing proof that
Geo. Mile* did not, have ‘ imperative
order*/* such as be ba* always claimed
to have. The aclbsnliclty of this *vi
deuce cannot be controverted. When
President Davi* and a number of other

Tts dividend record is unsurpassed by any other company in the world.
It piotects your dividends in case of death and provides for your old age.

As compound results are the source of life of all the old line companies,
what is best for the company should be best for the insured. And for best
results take a policy in the grand old MUTUAL LIFE.
Fathers see to it that the daughter, the pride of your heart, when as
sailed by the vicissitudes of life and touched by the cruel hand of fate, shall
be provided with a guaranteed income lor life, < The MU TUAL Llr h, the

Bank of England—writes that guarantee.
And to the patriotic soldier who feels called upon to avenge the wrongs
to his country, we say don't forget the loved ones at home—the Mutual Lite is

m this grand old company we give the following extract from a letter of the

“I wish you to assure every policy-holder in this Company
that, his rights will be fully protected under all circumstances
and tha no one need hesitate to respond to the call of patriot
ism or duty through fear of the forfeiture of his policy.
