Eight Convicts Escapr.

ate prisoners escaped from the branch
prison at Big Mountain. Their escape
was effected by way of an old abandoned
airshaft. It is thought that they were
assisted in their escape either by trusties
or civilians, otherwise escape would :

Fort Worth Officials Indicted.
Fort Worth, Tex., Sept. 28.—Tho
grand jury has found true bills against
City Secretary R. V. Burns and A. B.
Mabry, secretary of the waterworks.
These officials are charged with malfea
sance in appropriating tho funds of the
city to their own use.
Not Soldiers But Citizens.
Knoxville, Sept. 28—Affairs in the
Druuuuond lynching case have assumed-
altogether a different shape. The report
comes from a reliable source' that not
soldiers but citizens of Briceville are
about to be convicted of the lynching.
Indicted for Killing Bis Brother.
Augusta, Ga., Sept 28.—The grand
jury of Aiken county has .indicted Jesse
Cawley for the murder of his brother,
Henrv Cawley, who was assassinated
two miles from Augusta, over the river,
last Saturday week.

Gloucester, Mass., Sept. 28.—The
schooner Pioneer sailed nearly seven
weeks ago on a cod fishing trip to tho

Hail Has Been Recovered.
Atlanta, Sept. 28.—Two negroes have
been arrested, and the proof is said to be
conclusive, that they are responsible for
the loss of the great pile of looted mail
matter found recently in the suburbs of
the city.

ner's jury rendered a verdict as a result
of their investigation into the cause of
the deaths of the eight men who were
shot down during the reign of mob law
on last Wednesday night. Their finding
*is to the effect that the men came to
their death “by weapons in the hands of
men or soldiers of the Roanoke Light In
fantry, under the command of Captain
John Bird and other officers,” and that
the evidence showed that he was acting
under instructions of Mayor Trout. -

St. Louis. Sept. 28.—Charley Gorman
and Jimmie Golden, 15 years old, last
Wednesday kidnapped Harry Clayton,
10 years old. and locked him in a box
car, where they kept him two days. In
this time they waited his mother twice,
demanding $20 ransom. At last it was
promised them, and they were arrested
when they released Harry. They were
fined and sent to the house of refuge.
