S' natot Owen, of Oklahoma, utter
ed words that were as truthful as
they wore lilting when in speaking
against the ship subsidy bill lie ad
vised the senate to adjourn and go
home. '"Phis congress has been re
pudiated by the American people,"
declared Senator Owen, “and yet. It
continues in session in an effort to
put through the discredited legisla
tion like the ship subsidy hill. The
people repudiated the party in power
because of its advocacy of ship sub
sidy, other subsidies and ita sutmerv-
icnco to the special Interests." The
dignity of such eminent t tatesinrh as
Vice President Sherman, Senator |g»r-
itner, and nil the horde of discredi
ted servants of the special Interests
was considerably i u ft led by Senator
Owen’s plain talk. Tho truth fre
quently hurts.
I.'aimna, are rank standpatters. Their
(Hu. Ics and leadership have been re
pudiated by five progressive grange
states that contain more than two-
thirds of the total membership of the
organization, which is probably half
a million. The extent of the protest
against their leadership, and tho real
feelings of the farmers throughout
the country Is Indicated by the fact
that the membership of (he grange j
has declined nearly half during their
regime. They are either actually un
der the control of the "Interests" of
woefully ignorant of the demauds of j
the times and the necessities of the
people they assume to represent. They
hold to the repudiated standpat high
protective tariff.
The excuse they offer for the defeat
of the treaty Is that while admitting
scr"» foodstuffs free and greatly re
ducing the duties on others, manufac
tured goods remain at the same old
rates. This is a flimsy pretext which
will not docelve the farmer. The
tiealy is but an entering wedge that
will be followed by a radical revision
downward by the coming Democratic
congress. Men like Bac helor and
Jones, and the trusts and combines
and protected monopolies they stand
for, dread the breach that the tieaty
is hound to make in the high protec
tion wall. They know that It prosag
os the demolition of the structure
behind which the grasping monopo
lists have sheltered themselves while
robbing the consumer. They will not
fool the farmer, who is plucked right
and left for everything he uses. Far
mers as a class will benefit as much
as any other* In the country by tli
lowering of duties and the reinovul
of artificial trade restrictions.
