Joe Spooner, a well known farm

negro found the girLyit home, her
father and brother being at work
in the field. He grabbed the girl
by the throat, but she jerked away
and gave the alarm. A posse was
■eon organised and the negro was
earned to the town jail at Iron

of lynching. Judge Frank Hart

in Savannah two days ago and
skipped.
The fsco value of the orders was
$5,000. It is known that 2G of
them were cashed at an average

guilty of violating the city ordi

caused mueh damage, and that
the homes of Mr. Cyril Cox and a
Mr. I icon, near Ruskin, were dam
aged. It is also reported that.one
tann home and all outbuildings
were destroyed, besides quantities
of stacked wood.
For the past two weeks the
woods about Wayeross have been
on fire, and many places have hewn
saved only by the hard work of
entire families. For three days
fires in the vicinity of Dr. S. S.
Ludlum’s home gave him cause
for anxiety, nnd others report
like experiences.
Last night the brisk wind from
the west drove the fires due east,
and the edge of the suburb known
as ‘‘New Town,’’ west of the
Const Line shops, was not far
from the flames, though no un
easiness was felt by those living
out there. By midnight the wind’s
velocity had increased to the pro-
portions of a gnlc, nnd practical
ly all communication from Way-
cross to points west was cut off.
Wires were tom down by falling
trees. The Bell Telephone Com-
pany was able at 11 o’eloek to call
Valdosta but no further. The
jheavy rain of this morning has
put a quietus to the fire question,
and effectively settled the dust
problem.

Sirs. S. W. Walker is visiting
Mrs. John Iloltzendorf at Dupont.
It’s gone, vanished, vamoosed,
and there arc no mourners.
For the sake of those who did
not learn of its (official) demise,
it will only be necessary to state
that it was placed in the hands of
a "Special Committee,”
A special committee of political
bills is a sort of Betsy Bobbit, who
is so careful of its own welfare as
to he deaf to the wailings of the
infant committed to its care; so
all special committees forget the
bills entrusted to them, and as
there was no parent nor guardian
appointed for the Taliaferro Bill
toask where it’s ofllspring had
gone, your little Bill died.
Savannah, Charleston, Bruns
wick and Pensacola, were bitter
ly opposed to the bill being passed
and for many reasons.
Jaeksoiivilic was sinfully anx
ious for it to pass, as she thought
mueh pelf would be added thereby
to her already swolen income.
But there’s nothing doing.
There will be no Federal inspec
tors with long noses poking sticks
into the buckets and barrels where-
rosin and turpentine are ‘farmed.’
Jacksonville will have to think
upji new stunt for hogging all the
shipments of naval stores for that
port, as Betsy Bobbit doesn’t in-
tend to let go of the little Bill un-
til it’s last feeble wiggle has been
recorded.—-Brunswick Journal.
