K &r ■ I'he no fence law prows
more and iimrr unpopular, and we
do not believe that one in ten in the
county is at this time in favor of it.
11 it was passed we feel sat islied that
popular opposition would prevent
its execution. Itissimple nonsense
for the I.epislature to attempt to
iirpe the measure upon so un
willing a people.
ttsr We learn from the Augusta
(‘hronirlr that ;i meeting of the sur
vivors of tin* Fifth (teorgiu Regi
ment was held in that city on
"Wednesday night, and there will
he a reunion of the veterans of that
gallant old regiment in Augusta on
I lie ‘Jut h of August. We are glad
to chronicle these reunions—they
serve to refresh and keep green in
our memories the cause for which
fought.
The project has been sud
denly raised by the Radical
turning lower South Carolina into
an African colony, with the evident
hope of makinga place in tin* South
which they can call their own. As
the Presidential election of hSKt
draws on a pace, the Radical party
becomes restive. They see that if
tin' Democratic leaders act with
sense, Radical defeat is a foregone
conclusion.
ssr It is said that the “free
■puss” system has caused so much
absenteeism in the Legislature as
at times to scarcely leave a quo
rum. The newspapers took the
matter in hand and began to
“punch” these free tickets so se
verely that it has waked up the
solid, business members, and they
havi* refused to dispense with the
morning roll-call, and will let (lie
names of absentees go to record.—
This, it E claimed, is having the ef
fect to put a stop to absenteeism.

The House of Representa
tives passed the capital bill on
Wednesday, and we hope the Senate
will promptly concur in its action.
Wo are not an advocate for the
squandering of tin* people’s money,
hut the old barn in which the Leg
islature now meets is a disgrace to
h) the great Empire State of the
South, We do not know how much
the Legislature designs to expend
)n the erection of a capital building,
but in our opinion $2,(100,0(10 would
not be too much if enough. Wo
await the action of the Senate
in this matter with considerable
anxiety.
HOT Fader the caption of “A

ring the past season the mails were
Hooded with circulars from a tlrm
in Chicago, Fleming A Merriam,
proposing to do a legitimate bro
ker's business. Some dividends
were sent out to persons who hit at
the bait. Tin* result was that many
of our people lost money, hut the
iirm after doing a smashing busi
ness, smashed itself. Recently
Wiley, Struwbridge A- Co. have
been sending out similar circulars.
The Chicago Tribune gives them a
bad name, and advices from the
Chicago Hoard of Trade endorses
/lie Tribune." Those who bite at
ibis kind of bait are sure to be bit
ten, and may as well throw their
money in the lire. These circulars
art* beautifully printed and most en
ticingly worded, and our advice Is
not to look at one of them twice.

Mr. F„ M. Johnson, who has been
engaged on the editorial stall*of the
Savannah Xeirs for the past three
years, has accepted a position on
that brightest of evening dailies,
the Savannah 'Times. Mr. Johnson
is a vigorous and graceful writer,
and will add a now feature of at
traction to that already sparkling
evening journal. We are glad to
note (he success of our enterprising
Savannah contemporary, and hope
its shadow may never grow less.
Mr. R. .1. Williams has accepted
the position of assistant editor on
llu* Swalnsboro l/emi-.er, and his sa

master of a facile pen. The Itnn-

always carefully edited, and is one
of the best country weeklies that
comes to our olltce. We welcome
brother Williams into the ranks ed

Augusta < 'hrmilcle.
Atlanta, Ga., August IT—The
city was shocked this morning by
the burning of the Kimball House.
It created a profound impression
and the people swarmed in masses
to the tire, it is regarded as the
heaviest disaster that has befallen
the city in ten years. This line ho
tel has been the leading instrumen
tality of the city’s progress. Such a
hotel is a weapon of growth. W e
shall feel the want of it and its
value now that we have lost it.
The tire broke out about I o’clock
and is believed to have occurred in
(he laundry. It made serious head
way before it was discovered too
late to save the house. The des
truction is complete. The hotel is
a ruin and it-* costly furniture a to
tal loss.
The hotel has a romantic history.
It was built in a little over six
months in 1S70 by 11.1. Kimball, al
ter whom It Is mimed, Ho hud his

the structure so as to inetfaceably

Mr, Cosby, the agent of Henry]
Clews, that they had traced into the j
building $:J0( 1,000 of the money ad
vanced Mr. Kimball oq the bonds!
of the Rriwswick end Albany Rail
road for the coiisti'iicthiu of Unit
road. Its history has been- dramat
ic in the extreme. It has been sold
and resold, and linn liy passed into

a price far below its value,
The diJlleulty about rebuilding it
is that the present owners got it so
far below its original cost that they
cannot rebuild it for the same mon
ey. M r. (‘ulpoppor, their Itgunt, says
it will be built at a cost of $-100,11(10,
which he will immediately proceed
to rn j si* by subscription, There is
about $-.so,nno josurunes* on the build
ing and $4a,000 on tin* furniture, a
wholly inadequate sum to cover the
losses.
There were 210 guests in the hotel
and RIO servants. Every one was
saved and the baggage was pretty
well taken out. Mr. Mnoviih* the
proprietor, acted very well. As
soon as he was aroused and looked
into the* condition of the lire, lie de
clared the building gone and went
to work awakening the guests. He
visited every room and in some
cases broke in the doors. He gave
his whole attention to arousing the
guests and getting them out of the
building.
It looks as if every vestige of the
'I'he flames was very hot and singed
and cooked the buildings, cracked
the glass windows, drew the paint
and turpentine from the doors and
threatened with deadly flame tin*
hundreds of thousands of dollars of
property.
The engines forced streams ot
water upon the heating walls. The
anxious owners stood inside and
watched the-encroaching lire with
eager gaze and trembling hearts,
wet blankets were hung out of the
windows to break the force of the
biting scourge. It looked as it Mc

; wholesale stocks must yield to the
! all-conquering conflagration, but
they escaped by the skin ot their
teeth. Another danger was that
the towering walls of the Kimlml!
might fall upon them, in which
j event there would he no hope. It
was indeed an anxious time, fraught
with imminent peril. A fortunate
wind bore the falling walls inward
at one point. The brave liremen,
with consummate management and
at great risk, gave to other falling j
walls the safe direction and ward-!
ed off the danger.
The sight of daylight was full of
grandeur. The immense structure!
was a seething, livid mass of furl-]

of the fire driving up in angry
mountains of destruction, the vast
black spirals of smoke and ashes
