Compulsory School Attendance Law
-—■ * a*
The Compulsory Attendance Law for the Madison County
scnools for this scholastic year began Nov, 24th, to include 20
days before the holidays.
The Legislature last summer put it up to the county to en
force the law or to lose its public school fund. 'lhe latv was
greatly strengthened and provision was made for its enforce
ment. It was amended by raising the time from four to six
months and to the completion of the seventh grade. It also made
it obligatory on the County hoard of Lducation %.o appoint an at
tendant officer t see if the law is being enforced.
It has not been the intention of the Board to disregard the
| a w the past two years tfrid an effort has been made as to its en
forcement, but the winter 1917-1918 was unusually bad during the
Compulsory months and on account oi the 'Hu” the past winter
it seemed almost impossible to enforce same.
So if there are any children in the county within the ages 8
to 14 not in school, we ask that they be enrolled at once. If for
any reason your school is not in session and it you live within 3
miles of another school, send to your nearest school, as the law
will not excuse you otherwise.
it is the duty of the people of the county to obey this law as
it is any other law of the State, and we trust that every one will
/ f
do his part in the carrying out of this law.

All Illness Calls You to Battle
The most competent of our Medical
Authorities tell us that l-Bth of all hu
man illness is due to Venereal Dis
eases. These are preventable diseas
es. We have over 300,000 of our citi
zens suffering from lt:< se diseases. We
have been placed by the government,
by actual figures, with 13.03% of
Venereal Diseases in the second mil
lion men examined.
The cities in Georgia are in an aw
ful condition, Savannah leads all the
cities of the United States in infec
tions of Syphilis ar.d Gonorrhea with
27.45%. Atlanta ha 1 ' 11.03%, Augusta
16.31%, Maccn 18.43%, and so it goes.
The awful consequences of these
diseases are ret real " and by the peo
ple. 60% of the sterility is due to
Gonorrhea. 40% of the blindness is
chargeable to this cause. Here you
are up against race suicide. About
30% of insanity is due to Syphilis.
The '‘engagement chancre” and the
“honeymoon appendicitis” are familiar
to all physicians. 90% of stillbirths
are due to Syphilis, baring accidents.
To this add the eripule children and
feeblemindedness. VVe could prolong
the truth but the necessity does not
exist.
We should cut down the approprla-J

for the Blind by making adequate pro

eases that prc.duce the causes for
which they have to seek institutional
care.
