Mr. Chairman—Tho wreath of beautiful
immortelles which encircles the brow of
the illustrious dead was woven of flowers
cnllod not more from the brotd fields of
political adventure and oivio glory than
from the narrower gardens of legal lore
and forensic renown. It is meet, there
fore, that, in response to the invitation of
the committee of arrangements, as Geor
gia's head of the administration of her
law*, I add a few words to what has been
said in honor of his memory.
Leas than twelve months ago the State
was draped in weedso/moornisg, and with
the circle of the entire sisterhood she bowed
her head in sorrow and wept ovor the fresh
grave of the ohief magistrate of the Union.
Tho rude and rathleas "rnauner of his tak
ing off," the protracted, weary .and
sad footsteps of the great anfferar
through the dark "valley of the
fhadow of death,'* the patient he
roism with which he endured the anguish,
and the painful suspense with which the
people breathlessly watched the event—all
struck the great chords of the American
heart with almost nnntterable sympathy,
and iU sobbing vibrations made a sponta
neous and indignant wail throughont the
land. It was fit, sir, that Georgia officially
