TAX
The bill recently introduced in tlie
Legislature to <stablu>h in each county of
■ the State a board of tax assessm-s, while
not free from miner defects should be
Iho far perfected us to accomplished in
j ita operations the objects intended, a
more equitable fiKseasment of taxes among
| the comities of the Mutt. It was urged
i last week by the Columbus Times that it
wa objectionable because it will, if paas
cd, create from eight to twelve hundred,
or more officers, who will manege to drag
from the State and county treasures sev
eral ihoUHand dollars annually. In cane
the bill a’.ould pass, our contemporury
HUggcHt# that the pay of these board* of
assessors should bo deducted from the
comminßi'Jhi*' received by tax receivers.
Now, we urc at <*ll times prepared to ad
vocate economy in the administration ol
the laws, but in thi* instance fail to per
ceive the jast*ce of robbing Paul to pay
Peter. The receivers of tax returns are
not ovefwell compensated under the
present law; and it would be an act of
great injustice to them to have their pay
reduced, in order to compensate another
and distinct set of officers. The tax re
ceivers perform their duties faithfully and
intelligently, and richly deserve all tho
com pen “at ion they got.
Under our system of government it is
ue :es ary, it see ns, to have a large num
ber ol officers. It in the administration
of an part of the public service it is nec
essary to provide against defects in law*
already iti force, by creating new offices
and ue ♦ duties, ample provision should
be made for the compensation of such
offices without prejudice to other depart
ments of the sen ice. On the point at
issue, wo apprehend that no loss will oc
cur to the State by rs.isou of the officer 4
referred to in the Assessor's bill, as the
savings over the enure State will not only
pay the service, but turn a handsome
revenue annually into the treasury. We
think a more rigid system than that now
in force for the ass- ssment of property
should obtain. Wu trust the Legisln
ture will improve thu Assessors bMI and
let it become a law.
