A Husband’s Preparations.
Detroit Free Press.
The other morning, when a Detroit
er seated his wife in a car oil the
Michigan Central to make the trip to
Chicago alone, he took a look arotlnd
him and said to her:
Now, love, if you should want the
window raided, hero are a dozen gen
tlemen Who will break their necks to
accommodate you.
Yes, dear.
If you feel lonesome and want some
body to talk with yon about affairs in
Egypt, Noah’s ark or the ice period,
don't hesitate to call upon any of these
gentlemen.
I understand.
You triolt’t know enough to leave
the car at noon and get your dinner,
and you had better ask some of them
to Accompany you. If they offer to
pay for your meal, don’t be squeamish
about it.
Of Course not.
You may want to read to pass ;i\v;iy
the time. If so, any of these gentle
men will be only too gird to purchase
you half a bushel of the latest books
and magazines, lie careful to save
’em for me to read when you get
home.
I'll be certain love.
And you can say to them that we
have been married four years ;wc do
not live happily together ; t am a do
mestic tyrant; you hate strong thoughts
of procuring a divorce ; you feel that
you could love the right sort of a hus
band ; you like oranges and peanuts;
you are innocent and confiding ; you
have never tiaveled ; you would he
very much obliged to anyone who Will
get you a hack, see to your trttitk and
pay all the expenses. Good-by, love.
Good-by, dark
And wasn’t it strange that not one
single man in that car even spoke to
that lady in a ride of three hundred
miles ?
Carp in Coweta.
German carp culture is becoming
a popular and profitable industry in
Georgia. As an examxdo of what is
being done in Coweta county, wo
call attention to the success of Mr
A VV Blokes in the Sixth district.
110 received hoiiio of the first carp
adit to this country. They arc now
seventeen inches- long, and liavo
hatched out millions of little ones
this h ring, Th-so roeeiv. dby him
hint February are now eight inches
long and three lUuhos broad. Com

Rings—Their Use and Abuse.
Seven ytlilng ladies were perceived
in a horse <-£ir, of whom not one had
both gloves on drill.none wt'fe wholly
bare handed. Of the-rP frnit had
gloves on their right hands and three
on their left, and in every instance the
ungloved hand lay in the lap above
the other. All of the seven bare hands
had diamond rings upon them, and
whenevef any attentions were needed
by the bait or raiment of the ladies,
in every instance the ungloved hand
was employed to bestow them, and in
the necessary movements the stones
flashed and glittered very much. And
when, as happened in the process of
time, the seven young ladies left the
car one after another, four of them wa
ved their left hand to the conductor
to direct him to stop, and the other
three agitated their right hands, and
again the rings sparkled quite copious
ly, All of which was very curious and
interesting to the scientific mind.—

There is A. tjuiet about the the life
of a farmer, and the hope of a serene
cid age, that no other business or pro
fession cart promise. A professional
man is doomed sometimes to feel that
his powers are waning. He is doom
ed to see younger ami stronger men
pass him in the race of life. He looks
fonvard to an age of intellectual me
diocrity. Ife will be last where once
he was first. But the farmer goes in
to partnership, as it were, with nature
—he lives with trees and flowers—he
breathes the sweet air of the fields.
There is no 'constant and frightful
trouble uponhismirid.Hisnights Arc fill
ed with sleep and rest.He watches his
flocks and herds as they feed upon
the green and sunny slopes. He
hears the pleasant rain falling upon
the waving corn, and the trees he
planted in hi youth rustles above him
as he plants others for children yet to
be, —Col IngersoU.

Growing Old.
Yes, wo arc growing old, though
unconsciously, and Iho foot of time
falls ns softly as ever, and the cur
rent of life Hows oh ns srhOothly as
ever—indeed, the fuller the current
the more noiseless its flow; ard
months and years are after all so
very ranch alike tiny pass away
without special observation, and wo
begin to got old before wo set down
to a simple sum in arithmetic- the
subtraction of tile year of our birth
from the current year—we are as
tonished at the answer and are so
doubtful of its but al
ways with tho same result,
Cbildreu grow up round its, but
we get use to that, and are so busy
that wo seldom stop to compute
their ages and realize tho swift
flight of years. Tho wife who has
stood lovingly an 1 faithfully at our
side so loag, never changes, and is
always the fair young bride of the
old happy days. Though his hair
may have grown gray in some way
that wc do not understand, and his
step mays, (in a little less elastic
and firm than it was, tint husband
does n t seem to have changed
much after all,
Jfc is to us the same strong, Itlan
ly one whom we loved so much jitst
a little while ago,
lobe sure, the few friends of otlr
youth still remain, tiro all gray
headed; out we do not think much
■>t that, tor wo all seem to ho using
tho same fasiuitablc hair-dye.

Tho children had gouo to bed,- aftd
perfect silence prevailed within and
without the house, At 10:30 Mrs
Wilson laid down a paper she was

mantel, and as she passed she glan

tho ghostly face of her absent son.
Almost frightened .to death she
stood motionless aud speechless,
while the phantom slowly faded
from view, and then with a cry ot
anguish she tell in a swoon to tho
