I now Iroow why the dear Rods caro mo si^r.t—
Oil. not to see tho river liUea grow:
Ah, not to watch tho seasons como and go,
Nor yet to »eo tho Jewels of tha night.
To SCO one with tho world against one fight
Through weary yearsand lonely years? Ah, not
And not to see an iceberg, drifting, glow
]4neatb a summer moon's celestial night.
But Just because they know that I would garo
Upon a star, that shines as one through space.
Until my heart grow thick with strangled sighs.
Sly days aro turned to nights, my nights to days—
For, oh, 1 sec tho woes of Borne dead raco
peep down in your miraculous, sad eyes!

Vengeance or tho Cobra.
Andrew Fischer, an employo of tho
Madras Railway company, was seated in
the veranda of his bungalow and ob
served two large cobras on the barren
plain immediately in front, of tho house.
Arming himself with a stout stick, ho
proceeded to the spot and encountered
the snakes. Ho succeeded in killing ono
of them, while tho other, which had
been slightly wounded, managed to
escape. Mr. Fischer hunted about for
the runaway, but could not find it. He
then returned to his bungalow and rested
for 6omo time, ns he was off duty. Later
in the day he prepared to go to his work,
and with that object got out his clothes
to dress., Ho sat on his coat, and was
about to put on his shirt when ho felt
something bite him on tho back. Ho
turned round, and to his horror found a
snake on tho cot behind him, which ho
is said to have recognized os tho cobra ho
had wounded that morning. Ho imme
diately sought relief, and all kinds of
remedies were applied, but to no effect,
and ho died in tho evening. It i3 com
monly believed among tho Hindus that
no animal is more revengeful than tho
cobra, and that if an attempt is mado to
kill it and it escapes it never gives itself
rest until it has wreaked its vengeance
uoon its assailant.—Homeward Mail.
