Karel Theory or
Wo know mossnpro i* beneficial as we
know the tongue i u lx> coated in certain
fevers, but why fi.ij occurs may puzzlo
many to whom tho mysteries of physiol
ogy arc too tightly sealed. In a word,
then, tho theory of massago is based not
only upon tho known effects already re
ferred to, but upon the hypothesis of the
direct alteration in the structure of cells.
In disease the cell walls in the animal tta
sue become hypertrophied. The formative
material or nucleus is imprisoned in an
impeneratrable steath through which
nourishment canifct be carried. This
hypertrophy of the cell wall in patholo
gical conditions is identical with that
which results by a alow process from the
advancement of ago. Massago breaks
down this hypertrophied condition of tho
cell wall by mechanical means, creating
fissures through which nourishment
forces its way to tho nucleus within.
Theoretically, if massage could bo applied
to every cell of the body, thero would bo
no reason why wo should overgrow old;
but, this being practically impossible, we
must be content with the moro limited
benefits it bestows, which, however, aro
important and considerable. — Medical
Register.
Soldiers’ Antlseptlo A.nmnnltlon.
According to Tho Medical Press a use
ful suggestion is being carried out by the
Netherland government, by which pro-
vision will lie tnado for supplying each
soldier during the time of war with a
cartridge containing sorno -antiseptic
dressings. Each cartridge will be made
of convenient size, namely, about three
Inches in length by two in width, and
will bo secured at ono end with a safety
pin. Tho dressing contained in each will
consist of n bandngo about tlirco yards
long, and two pieces of gauze, all of
which hnvo been rendered antiseptic by
Hcnco in
oUrnata solution.
tho
event of wounds being received a ready
means would bo at hand for the immedi-
‘ ato application of antiseptic dressings.
Soldiers in the cose of slight injuries
would probably at onco avail themselves
of the dressings, and tho latter could not
fail, to bo of much uso to tho surgeons.
The idea is well worthy of tho attention
of tho militury authorities in this coun
try, mid might even with advantage bo
adopted, as it has boon for years past in
tho German army. In tho wars in which,
during tho past few years England lias
been engaged in tropical climates, tho
early application of antiseptics to the
' wounds received by tho men was ad
mitted to bo a matter of tho utmost im
portance by tho army medical officers at
tached to tho forces,—Science.

A .Noiseless Clock Invented.
A noiseless riock has been invented l<y
n Frenchman. Ill placo of the usual
pendulum, tho hands aro set in motion
by tho unrolling of a chain, tho end of
which is fastened to a buoy floating in a
tank of liquid. This fluid escapes at a
uniform rate, and can bo utilized to feed
a lamp wick, thus giving tho apparatus
tho doublo character of a clock and
lamp. When tho lamp is lighted tho
necessary diminution of liquid takes
placo by combustion, at other- times by
aftrefully regulated dropping.—Homo

Mammoth Japanese Crab*,
Tho greatest marine curiosity of Eno-
shima waters is tho giant crab that
trundles along a body ns largo ns a
turtle’s, and sweeps out claws that meas
ure ten feet from tip to tip. Formerly
tho fishermen threw tlieso creatures back
into tho sea when they found their nets
tangled up witli them, but of recent,
years thoy clean tho shells and sell them
for foreign museums. Tho giant crabs
aro said topromenadotho beach at night,
and ono version gives them* phosphores
cent eyes. If imagination cannot supply
u picture of thoso crabs oft the bench, it
is nil detailed in “Allan Quatermain.”
Rider Haggard, in his careful owning up

markable things in that book, owns to

rible crabs, and so borrowed them to put
