THE LONGEST GAME
CLEVELAND IN NEW YORK.
Mr. George W. Ochs,of Chatta
nooga, who has been visiting leading'
cities in New York, writes to the
Chattanooga Times to say: “I feel
absolutely sure that Cleveland will
carry New York State, and I am in
clined to believe his majority will not
fall short of 50,000.” He says Tam
many has fallen into line and will
work manfully for the Democratic
ticket, and the mugwumps and inde
pendents who supported Cleveland in
1SS j and 18S8 are again rallying to him
and will be reinforced by a large labor
vote and a German vote which Mr.
Cleveland never before received. Con
tinuing, Mr. Ochs says:
“Canandaigua was a central point of
Hillism. When the anti-snappers call
ed a convention in the county to send
delegates to Syracuse not tive Demo
crats responded. The whole county
was for iliii. 1 interviewed a dozen
wide-awake. Democrats at Canandai
gua yesterday and they all said Cleve
land would not lose a Democratic vote
in the county and would receive from
75 to 150 more votes than m 1;S4 or in
1S88. One Democrat named five Re
publicans in one precinct who would
vote for Cleveland this fall.
“At Buffalo there is great enthus-
ism. I heard one Republican manu
facturer say he intended to vote for
Cleveland on the tariff issue and a
number of Republican Germans, who
have always heretofore supported the
Republican ticket, declared they
would do so no longer.
The new election laws in New York
are regarded as exceeding 1 ? favorable
for the Democrats; they will control
the Board of Supervisors in nearly all
the counties and moreover will have
the entire election machinery in their
hands. The reform method of voting
now prevails in the state and working
men can no longer he intimidated into
voting as their employers direct, and
bribery is impossible. One reputable
gentleman, told me the Republicans
paid as high as $10 per-vote four years
ago.
‘‘The increased enthusiasm among
Prohibitionists will also cut a consid
erable figure. Their vote will be
greatly increased in the state this fall
and out of every ten Prohibitionists in
New York nine come from the Repub
lican parly.
“.Coupled to ail thb is the recent
unfortunate conflict . at Carnegie’s
works, which has brought into bold
relief the failicies of the present high
tariff. Southern people can scarce
conceive the deep impression it has

The canning of Georgia tomatoes
for export to England would be a
profitable enterprise. . Hundreds of
tons of tomatoes are annually export
ed from the Canary islands to Great
Britian; but for the past several
months the tomato plants in the is
lands have been attacked by disease,
the result being that the product has
been unfit for shiJment. The disease
is not loeal, but. extends all over the is
lands. All efforts to check it have
proved vnavailing, and producers an
ticipate the loss of next year’s crop as
well as the larger part of the crop ol
this year says the Savannah News.
In 7iew of this state of affairs, the
National Provisioner sees no reason
why America tomatoes should not
take the place of the Canary island?
product. And, with steamship limes
from Georgia to ports to England, the
Morning News sees no reason why
Georgia tomatoes should not consti
tute a goodly portion of the American
products. There ?re no finer toma
toes raised anywhere than in Georgia;
anybody can grow them; they will
thrive anywhere;-it does not take
skilled labor to pack them; a canning
plant does not cost a great deal, and
direct lines from here to Europe
would put freights at a rate that
would probably leave a good margin
of profit to the packer.
Direct line steamers from Bruns
wick, as has been announced, will
begin regular trips in September, and
a line from this city appears • to be as
sured. With this much in view, it
would be worth the while of tauck
producers and dealers t > look into the
tomato exporting busings.

Good money means money that does
not fluctuate in value, whether it is
gold, silver or paper. It means that
every dollar is intrinsically equal in
value to every.other dollar, and that
paper money promises to pay shall be
redeemable in this standard currency.
This is what the silver plank of the
democratic platform calls for, and it
will meet with the approval of the bus
iness and financial men of the country.
