MERSHON AT ACREE.
POULAN AND PEACHES
4SD GLORIOUS GRAPES AND
CLEVER PEOPLE.
HE MAKES A SLEXDID SPEECH
FOR DEMOCRACY.
After three years of hard trial in the
i^Wcneeriiti Exposition cf the Great cultivation of the sweet grape Mr. J.
t*e*3ibiiiuea »t the wire Grass sec- lift is now reaping rich rewards
from his heavily-burdened vines.
The banging gardens of Ponlau find
in the Sand Hills a worthy competitor
and the glory that hovers over the lit
tle spot in Worth has hat a part of its
shadow to Dougherty.
And this shadow dispenses a bless
ing.
Mr. J. M. Tift, who has turned his
attention to fruit and grape culture,
now finds himself a very busy man.
Yesterday morning while he stood in
lront of the Southern Express com
pany’s office the large delivery wagon
backed up to the side walk to take on
a load of his sweet grapes. Mr. Tift
stood there among the baskets that
almost blocked the side walk and as
the agent of the Express company
piled the baskets into the wagon the
driver at the other end was soon “out
ol sight,” so bulky was the load.
Air. Tift shipped over two thousand
pounds yesterday morning and his
crop being in the neighborhood of fifty
thousand pounds be will be kept busy
somt time to come in dispensing this
sweet fruit. J
In reply .to a question from a repor- i
ter of the News and Advertiser he
said: “l have shipped quite a quan
tity of grapes this season, the first I
have shipped for market since my
vineyards began bearing. Tije re
turns have been good, remarkablv
good, and I tell you it bents water
melons all hollow. I ship all over the
country and the demand for grapes
at good prices is in strikiog contrast to
the watermelon grower who finds in
many instances that he has to pay the
freight on his shipments. With
grapes a man can make three times as
much money on the same ground and
be at much less expense.”
Mr. Tift Is to be congratulated on
his success in this line and the fact
that he is kept busy supplying num
erous foreign markets is an estimate
of the value of his crop. He could
sell twice his crop at good figures.
Isn’t this encouraging for South
west Georgia?

( 1 Acree’s barbecue and gala day was a
perfect success yesterday, and all who
attended were glad they were fortun
ate enough to have been present.
Next to the dinner the speaking was
the most prominent feature of the
day. Speeches were made by Judge
M, L. Mershon, of Brunswick, Col.
Jesse W. Walters, Mr. E. B. Jones
and Hon. W. E. Wooten, and they
were all powerful speeches and listen
ed to with the closest attention.
Judge Mershon was the principal
orator of the day and hi* speech was a
: masterpiece in every respect, and w as
delivered with powerful force. It
made a deep impression upon the
hearers who will long remember the
words ol golden truth that fell from
j his lips during his appeal for Demoe-
] racy.
The other speakers were at their
best and added new laurels to their
brow. Albany’s gifted young orators
win for themselves an enviable reputa
tion everywhere.
Only one unfortunate occurrence
marred the pleasure of the day. Mr.

to show us the sights of Paulan. A
; trip was made to his large vineyard
and the sight there was simply won
derful, To one who has only seen
the wire grass section in Its agricultu
ral development the tale that could be
truthfully toldof that vineyard would
►he hooted at. To be appreciated you
should seo the long rows of thrifty and
hardy grape vines with their clusters
of luaciouS' grapes glistening in the
morning sun. No one in that.party
will ever forget the visit to that vine
yard soon nor will they forget the
kindness of Mr. McPhaul, who never
tired in looking after the pleasure or
the pa^rty.
A very pleasant visit was also made
to the beautiful home or Dr. J. F. Wil
son, who has a lovely place and was
extremely kind to ue.
In the limited space now at hand it
is imppsslbie to do justice to the sub
ject, imfit will be fully treated at a

a more extended notice.
The feature of the day was the fruit
and vegetable exhibit, and the main
desire of those good people seemed to
be Uf-fltl our-party up with something

pressing my sympathy for Col. Wal

tried to make way with some specially

and vegetables was simply marvelous,
