Macon, Ga., April 16,1807.
DearTUadbk I have promised during
I ray brief absence t£ give you tbo result of
my observations. In leaving Albany I met
with Mnj. IC. H, Bacon, of Mitoboll county,
who represented crop prospects ns very
good, the recent frosts having done but little
damage in this community. Planters were
j nearly through planting their cotton. The
negroes were attentive to their work, and if
; they continue to bo ns faithful to their
! contracts, a greater dogreo of prosperity
; will bless the country than has been antlci-

At Wooten we were joined by Col. Jor.

At - Smithvillu we have a few. moments

neatest places to stop in the country, and
one of the best places to supply the “inner

hot eolfee and other things to keep a man
from getting hungry. Hmitliville is rapidly

As we proceed farther tip tho country, a
perceptible difference was apparent as to

were at least a week earlier in the enjoyment

and as we reached Port Valley the wind had
risen and was piercing and cold. At Hying,

is praised by every one who invests his

At Macon, of course, everybody stops at

MaMrliff.
Mr. Editoji A few figures will dem
onstrate tho abttolutoiiecessity oi manuring.
And figures arc generally the strongest and
most anrf\vcrable_argumeut8.
Tho lands in this country (I menu this part
of Georgia,) will average a five hundred
pound bag of cotton to tlireo acres, nnd fif-1
teen bushels of corn to tlio single acre. I j
use theso figures as a safe calculation.— \
This reduced to pounds per acre, will bo ol I
cotton lint ono huudred, sixty-six and two-
thirds pounds; and of corn, eight huudred
nnd forty pounds. Consequently, every
year the fanner will extract and carry off
these respective amounts from his land.—
And it must be remembered that the mate
rial or soil thus taken away, is tho very ks-
hknck, the cfiKam ofthe land. And in ten
years there has been removed over sixteen
hundred pounds, if planted nil the time in
cotton, and over eight hundred pounds if
planted iu com. Tho uecessary consequence
is, that the land will become exhausted af
ter awhile. The restoration of this lost
material to the laud is manuring. And the
most ignorant will perceive from the above
that it life extraction is continued indefi
nitely w ithout any restoration, that the
laud must necessarily become worthless for
theso crops.
Now, by a miserly system of manuring,
the farmer may restore only one-half that,
lie takes away, and may, in this way, put
oil the period of exhaustion. Or, lie may
return to the land just what he takes off it,
and his laud will then neither improve nor
deteriorate beyond the waste caused by
washing rains. Or, in the third place, lie
may restore to the laud by a judicious sys
tem of manuring, more than he takes away,
and tho consequence will lm that his lauds
will improve in value year alter year. The
first is the Southern style of farming—the
Iasi the European.
Now, if the laud can he kept up to the
same producing capacity one year after
another by manuring, so that it shall never
exhaust, bv doubling or trebling the manure
it seems that tlio productive eupaeity also
may lie doubled or trebled. So by a judi
cious system of manuring, the farmer may
concentrate his operations on a smaller
scale; and will consequently need fewer
laborers and mules. And while ho thus
saves their wages and expenses, ho makes
equally as much or moro money by (lie sales
of his produce, and is getting every day
richer by the improvement of his laud.
