Dealing With People
This week my column
is limited to a very select
audience. I just want to
talk to all of you who deal
ticipating in the set-aside
program, they help cut
the oversupplies that are
currently holding down
prices. By putting their
grain in the reserve
program, they will
remove excess supplies
from the market until
farm prices rise."
Barley, corn, grain
with people on a full-time
basis. That means
teachers, receptionists,
doctors, gas station at
tendants. It also means
parents, children, and
anyone with a friend.
It you think about it,
you really can't do much
unless you can com
municate with other
people. You can't go
shopping, you can't order
a spare part, you can't
even get a good night's
rest unless you know your
family and friends
are; safe and sound. Yet
this most necessary and
pleasant link between you
and the rest of the world
can be one of the most
difficult arts to master.
Poor communication
can cost you your job,
alienate your friends and
family, and cut you oft
just when you need an
understanding shoulder
to lean on. Grace
Eubanks, a counselor in
the Coftee County School
System in Douglas,
knows what it's like to
watch children struggle
with poor com
munications between
each other, their parents
or their teachers. So she
has set down some
thoughts that may help
you with your com
munications struggles.
A Little Understanding
You've probably
already figured out that
everybody needs a little
understanding, and you
probably see com
munications as the ability
to tell what is bothering
you. That's part of it says
Eubanks, but there's a
second halt to that
equation.
Communication is an
activity on both sides -
one talks or gestures or
appeals while the other
pays attention. ''To pay''
means that you have to
part with something of
value, like your time or
your own interests or
worries. It you're not
paying attention, then
you're rejecting them.
Rejection hurts; at
tention helps. Think back
sorghum or wheat
producers who do not
participate lose target

and disaster protection

to a broken relationship
in your life and ask some
questions: Have you
rejected him? Have you

You can't change his
attitude but you can
change yours.
Learn To Listen
Learn to listen deeply.
The art of listening is at
its highest form when you
can muster all your in
tensity and awareness
and focus it on someone
else. Eubanks calls it "a
listening heart."

Cattle Situation
Timely marketing of
fed cattle is helping keep
cattle prices sub
stantially ahead of a year
ago.
For the first time in
several years, according
to our Extension Service
animal scientists, the
beef cattle industry has
been very current in its
marketings.
They believe that
marketing fed cattle in a
timely and orderly way
- other words, selling
them with no more days
on feed than necessary -
is what helped improve
prices in recent months.
Industry represen
tatives, including the
National Cattlemen's
Association, are calling
tor a continuation of those
marketing practices.
Lower Costs
A major advantage of
timely marketing is a
lower unit production
cost. It was pointed out
that the last days of the
feeding period are the
most expensive. In other
words, it takes more feed
just to maintain the
heavier animal, and less
energy is left over to put
on weight. The rate of
gain is slower. Over
feeding not only becomes
very expensive in terms
of feed costs, but may
sugar," Langston added.
Farmers who par
ticipate in the program
agree to take out of
production one acre for
every ten planted in 1978
to corn, grain sorghum,
and barley for grain; two
acres for every ten
planted to wheat for
grain; and reduce the
acreage of NCA crops by
this set aside amount.
Sign-up will be con
ducted through May 1.
This will be the first year
since 1973 that a set-aside
program has been in
effect, Langston said. In
1973, 1,852,274 farms
parficipated in the
national feed grain
program and 1,033,019
participated in the wheat
program.
anything. But swallow
that urge to tell people
what to do, and let them
find their own way.
If you can master that,
then you have a good
start on patience. Often
you just need to wait,
listen or stand by until
someone can work out his
own problems. But he
won't feel alone in
working them out if you
can convince him that
you care.
Those are Eubanks'
four steps to real un
derstanding. They sound
simple, but they aren't
easy - listen, forget
yourself, be paflent and
be concerned.
also result in less
desirable yield grades.
Fed cattle sold recently
have made a profit for
feeders, and one of the
reasons is that average
carcass weights have
been down. Average days
on feed have been less
than a year earlier. In
short, cattle feeders have
saved on costs by selling
cattle when they are
ready.
Job Not Over
Several other factors
have helped the cattle
market recently. For
example, total beef
production in January
was down two percent
from a year earlier, and
non-fed slaughter was
down 12 percent.
And the severe winter
weather in the Midwest
set back cattle on feed in
that area. Midwestern
packers have been forced
to buy some cattle from
other areas. Severe
weather interfered with
beef movement, too, and
this increased demand
and prices for available
supplies.
Another factor is that
competition from other
meats has been down.
Hog prices have been
about S4B per cwt.
recently, compared with
s4l to $42 a year earlier.
While beef cattlemen _
have continued to keep
current in their
marketings so far in 1978,
the job is far from done.
It looks like fed cattle

Emergency Loans
Still Available Here
FmHA has approved
2,888 emergency loans for
a total of $261,977,400
since June 1977. FmHA
emergency loans are
made to eligible farmers,
ranchers, and
aquaculture operators for
losses, major ad
justments, operating
expenses and other
essential needs arising
from natural disasters so
that they may continue
their operations and
return to local sources of
credit as soon as possible.
All loan applicants must
be unable to get sufficient
credit from local com
mercial sources. All loan
applicants must have
suffered a 20 percent
production loss to qualify
for a loss loan. For actual
loss loans the interest
rate is 3 percent for the
first $250,000 and 5 per
cent for the additional
losses. The interest rate
for loans for other than
actual losses will be at 8
percent.
Expiration dates for
filing applications for
production losses vary
