AARP offers tax assistance in January
Free income-tax assistance will
be available for Perry and surround
ing area residents starting Saturday,
Jan. 30, 1993, through the Tax-
Aide program sponsored by the
American Association of Retired
Persons (AARP).
During January, volunteer coun
selors will have completed a train
ing course co-sponsored by the
AARP and the Internal Revenue
Service for preparation of income
tax forms. The course is given by
knowledgeable instructors in coop
eration with course outlines pro
vided by the Internal Revenue
Service. After live days of compre
hensive instruction in income lax
laws as they particularly apply to
older taxpayers, volunteers are
given an examination to be quali
fied as Tax-Aide counselors.
Nationally, more than 30,000 vol
unteers will have been trained to
work in this program and will have
assisted 1,500,000 taxpayers.
Volunteer counselors will operate
a counseling site in the meeting
room at the Houston County
Public Library located at 1201
Washington St., Perry every
Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to 1
p.m. and every Thursday afternoon
from 12:30 p.m to 4:30 p.m.
through April 15. Local volunteers
Citizens across Georgia
recycle Christmas trees
Undressing the tree and hauling it
off to the recycling collection site
has become as much a part of the
Christmas tradition as picking one
out and decorating it. Citizens
across the state did not miss the
chance to give their tree new life as
well as show their concern for the
environment. Over 200,()()()
Christmas trees were recycled
Saturday, Jan. 2 at over 270 collec
tion sites in 80 cities and counties
across Georgia. Participants were
also given the opportunity to re
place a natural resource and wel
come in the New Year by planting
the red maple or dogwood seedling
they received in exchange for their
tree.
The effort, coordinated by the
Georgia Department of Community
Affairs' Clean and Beautiful
Program and sponsored by the
Georgia Power Company, WSB-TV
and Callaway Gardens, diverted
about 30,000 cubic yards of waste
or the equivalent of over 3,000
dump truck loads from landfills and,
at the same time, allowed the wood
to be re-used. Most of the trees
were chipped into mulch for use on
community plantings to provide
erosion control and protection from
drought. Several communities
dropped the collected trees in area
lakes 10‘providc places for fish to
live and Clayton Clean and*
Beautiful's trees were used by the
Clayton Water Authority as an al
ternative fuel source.
Governor Zell Miller commented,

Paul LcVan, local coordinator for
the program, reports, "Our coun
selors, many of them retired per
sons from all walks of life who are
adept to understanding tax instruc
tions, enjoy working with num
bers, and who have experience in
tax matters, arc trained under the
IRS Tax Counseling for the Elderly
(TCE) program, with special atten
tion to problems likely to be en
countered by older taxpayers.
According to LcVan, past experi
ence has indicated that many older
persons tire unaware of special lax
credits or exclusions they are enti
tled to. Some may not be required
to file a return because of limited
income; and some who may not
their part in helping protect it. This
effort is an example of the sound
public/private partnership we arc so
fortunate to have in Georgia. As we
continue to face other challenges in
the 90s, working together can make
a difference."
An average of about 30 percent of
materials which are normally de
posited at the landfill consist of
yard trimmings. Many o f these
items can be shipped as mulch or
composted. Georgia Clean and
Beautiful coordinated this event, not
only to reduce the volume of waiste
that goes in the landfill, but also to
educate citizens that there arc easy
alternatives to reduce waste.

program or Georgia Clean and
Beautiful, call Lynn Cobb of the

Income Credit for the 1992 tax year
provides broader coverage and a
more favorable credit. The credit is
now made up of three parts—the ba

and the extra credit for a child born
in 1992. You may be able to take
the credit even if your filing status
is single. In some cases, the child
docs not have to be your dependent.
But the child must meet certain age
and other conditions. If you believe
you may be entitled to this credit
mention it to whoever is preparing
your return.
In addition, Tax-Aide reaches out
to people who arc unable to come
to the work sites. Volunteers ar

situations please call Paul LeVan,
