Kiwanians hear about landfill
By ANISSA CLEMONS
Staff Writer
A contractor from Taylor
County and a landfill specialist
from GeoScicncc engineering firm
spoke to Kiwanians Tuesday about
the new phase of the Houston
County landfill and the mechanics
behind it.
Tom Driver of GeoScicncc ex
plained the process used to protect
the environment. There are three
layers of components for protec
tion, he said. "The first layer is
soil." Driver said the soil is com
posed of clay. "Since you've got
plenty of it, costs arc kept down."
The next layer is a synthetic
liner, and the third is sand. The sand
prevents "garbage juice" from leak
ing into the water supply.
Rotary Club discusses
sexual harassment
By ANISSA CLEMONS
Staff Writer
In an effort to educate the public
about sexual harassment, Dannie
Jean Richardson spoke to local
Rotarians about the issue and the
need for more companies to imple
ment policies to combat the crime.
"It's difficult to pickup a news
paper or magazine Without finding a
topic relevant to this subject,"
Richardson, who is currently teach
ing a sexual harassment awareness
class at Robins Air Force Base,
said.
"We feel education is the way to
learn more about how sexual ha
rassment affects the work place,"
she said. "An ounce of prevention
is worth a pound of cure."
The 1964 Civil Rights Act made
it illegal to discriminate against a
person because of race, sex or reli
The safeguards included in the
landfill include monitoring wells,
which monitor all the surface water.
There are also methane gas moni
tors to insure safety. Driver said the
Environmental Protection Division
also routinely checks the landfill
sites.
The local landfill is "one of the
best run landfills. It’s like a well
oiled machine," Bobby Peed, a
Taylor County contractor who's
contracting phase two of the
Houston County Solid Waste
Disposal Facility said.
Phase two, currently bcir.g con
structed, is 11 and half acres which
will be filled in about three years.
The cost of the new phase ranges
from SI50,()()() to $500,000 per
gion, Richardson said. After the se
nate hearings concerning Anita Hill
and Clarence Thomas in 1991, a
"sub-category" was added to the act,
which made it a crime to sexually
harass an individual and allowed for
victims to sue for punitive dam
ages.
There are three types of sexual
harassment at the work place. The
verbal type is when "someone calls
you babe or honey, and it's unwel
come." It also includes "cat calls
and whistles."
The non-verbal type can occur
when someone has "elevator eyes,"
which is when someone looks the
victim up and down, Richardson
said.
Physical harassment is the other
form. This includes kissing, hug
plaase see HUTARY, page 12A
acre, which includes construction
costs. Houston County Public
Works Director Tommy Stalnakcr
told Kiwanians he thinks it’s im
portant they understand what goes
into constructing an environmen
tally safe landfill.
He said, "As you know, your
commissioners have raised the tip
ping fees and now you know how
expensive costs are." He said the
federal government mandates the
landfill be environmentally safe and
someone has to pay for it.
