PREVENTION OF SMALLPOX. j
I The key to the prevention of small-1
pox la vaccination. If all people In j
a community have been vaccinated [
jwithin five years, no epidemic of
S mallpox will occur in that coramun-
ty. Smallpox in a person vaccinated
twice iB uncommon,
j I Secondary in prevention is the quar-
’ iantine of the smallpox case and of all
unvaccinated persons who have come
in contact with the case. Quarantine
pf the case alone is not sufficient, as
•it would not prevent infection from
those who might be still in the incu-
jbation period of the disease.
| i On the appearance of smallpox the
jbealth officer urges all who have-never
been vaccinated or who have not been
vaccinated within five years to be vac*
cinated, knowing that if the people fol
low out this common sense procedure,
i they will be immune to the disease,
j The result is that if all are vaccinated
i the health officer knows that he has
“no smallpox to fear, other than those
lew persons infected before they were
! vaccinated.
I Persons vaccinated from 1 to 4 days
! after exposure to a case of smallpox
' rarely have the disease, the vaccina
tion protecting them.
Unvaccinated school children oi
1 teachers should not bo allowed to at
| tend school, as they form a group sus
ceptible to smallpox.

BLINDNESS FROM BIRTH.
"Born blind*’ means neglect, pure and
simple. We have a harmless preven
tive for this kind of blindness; in
,fact, we have a law on our statute
hooks that requires the physician oi
midwife to use this preventive. 11
reads:
"That it shall be the duty of any
person who shall be in attendance on
any childbirth to apply to the child
such prophylactic treatment as may be
proscribed by the State Board of Health
to prevont blindness from gonococcus
infection.
“That any person who shall nurse
or attend any infant shall report an>
Inflammation of the eyes of said child
that shall develop within two week®
after birth to the local health officei
or to a licensed physician.”

Good Plot Everything.
A plot, after all, Is a design to whlfh
everything else must be subordinated
If the reader’s attention is to he en
ticed and enthralled. Rude life may
not conform to this design, and the
psychologist nmy desptse It, yet there
is no such thing ns a good novel that
has not a good plot.—Francis Hackett
