opened quiet nnd about ns expected. There
was very good buying of October nnd De
cember on reports of too much rnln In
certain parts of the Atlantic states. Mar
ket nets as though it waa oversold and may
work up some. Shorts are a little nervous.

New Orleans, July 16—Cotton was com
paratively active today, and It displayed
a good undertone that carried prices up
for an advance of a half dollar a bale. In
aplte of the certainty of considerable low*
grade New York cotton being delivered on
contract here. Uentlment was more bullish
than it was last week, and shorts were dis
posed to cover nnd take the long side for a
turn. Heavy rains In sections of the east
ern belt—almost 6 Inches in some locnllfles
—were chiefly responsible for this right
abou-face. Liverpool cables were about ai
expected, but the weekly review* concern

however, passed unnoticed, nnd prices
climbed steadily until they were shout 10
points higher than the closing of Saturday,
at which level scalpers on the long side
were satisfied with their profits nnd com
menced to sell ont, thereby checking the
advance. Price came out with some very
strong bullish telegrams, which Increased
the desire to buy. All In til, the mar
ket was remarkably steady throughout the
morning, and any determined or spectacu
lar buying would probably havs started the
crowd to getting aboard the band wagon
before It waa too late. Durtug the next
week or so It will be a hard thing to deter
mine which Is the band wagon. Deliv
eries on July contracts will be put against
unfavorable crop news, which will be the
result of the present rainy spell. It Is
difficult to say which will be the stronger
feature.

ket started the week under the m6st
cheerful auspices. Foreign markets
showed decided Improvement In
branches. Consols and other Invest
ment Issues were fractionally higher.
A brisk advance occurred in South
African mining shares on the favorable
report of the Transvaal commission ap
pointed to Investigate the much agitat
ed coolie labor question, and the list
rose smartlr-
Our market, In addition to this turn
for the better abroad, was helped by
the gain of 34.500,000 with which the
focal banks started the week at the
sub-treasury and the consequent easier
tendency In money rates and by the
lmpreslson which had sunk deep at tho
close of the week that the stock market
was pretty well oversold.
Following tho London quotations, tho
stock market opened firm with the gen
eral average of prices U to ^ above
Saturday’s final. Trading at the outset
was fairly active. Reading was the
strongest stock, opening ui- a full point,
though It loBt half the gain. After the
opening trading the market became
dull, though the undertone held gener
ally firm.
After an early reaction In the trade
business became strong, and during the
rest of the first hour prices advanced
sharply, with gains In active issues
ranging from 1 to 2 points. The news
of the engagement or £400,000 gold in
London for shipment to New York was
a signal for general buying al laround
the room and has ben the chief factor
in the trading so far today.
Arbitrage brokers have taken 30,000
shares.for London account
Governments unchanged. Other bonds
quiet. .
