Jersey City, N. J., July 27^—Three
men were crushed to death last night
In th* cab of a freight locomotive
which overturned on the elevated
tracks of tha Erl* railroad at Mon
mouth and Eleventh atreeta, a short
distance east of the tunnel through
the Bergen Hill. They were Harry
Christman, 55 years old, the engineer;
Herman Molosky, 22 years old, the
fireman, and Asa Paddock, 28 years
old, the head fireman, all of whom lived
at Port Jervis, N. Y.
The locomotive was leaving Jersey
City with a west-bound freight of t
doten cars, and had been given a si*
nal that the track through the tunnel
was clear, when the ponderous ma
chine floundered over on Its side. All
three men were apparently killed In-
sternly.
They were enveloped In clouds of
escaping steam, but Molosky'e body
alone snowed signs of having been
scalded. His legs were almost par
boiled. The bodies were taken out of
the cab through a small opening near
the ground. Tho railroad officials ex
pressed the opinion that th* rails
spread, throwing the big locomotive-
over on Its aide.

Home for Mothers And Widows, on
Baker street, near Monroe, will be
closed has aroused much Interest. All
the Inmate* have left, except live, four
of whom will soon gn to make their
homes with close friends or relatives.
Th* reason for the closing Is somewhat
confused, but It seem* to have been
caused by a dispute between the two
elements of the aseoclatlon which man
eges the home,
The home wee founded In 1111 by
Mrs. John K. Cowen end others. Un
til two years ago It received stale ap
propriations of about 82,500 a year.
During the early organisation some un
pleasantness was caused by a mis
understanding between Mr*. Cowen, the
president, and Mrs. Jane E. Claiborne,
the secretary, which resulted In the
resignation or Mrs. Claiborne and the
subsequent appointment of a new
board of manager* by Mrs. Cowen.
