BIG RAILROAD TAX
CASES CARRIED UP
Chief Justice Fish has signed the
writ of error in the Central of Georgia
and Georgia railroads which carries
the cases to the-United States supreme
court.
These are the famous cases In which
the two roadg are combatting payment
of back taxes on 15,000 shares ot stock
In the Western of Alabama railroad.
The fight .now Is on the contention
of the railroads that they have not
been taxed by due procees of law. Oh
the final outcome of this case nearly a
million dollars hinges.

Panama canal tone, who announced
for the state legislature only a few
days ago, haa withdraw from the race
without making a single spech In the
campaign. At this tlmo Judge Kyle
has not announced his reasons for
withdrawing from the race, but will
probably do so through tho local week-
iy papers this week.

souri river persists In following an old
bed of the stream, which It Is now
threatening to do, Nobraska may find
herself with three senators and Sena
tor Gamble, of South Dakota, may be
retired from politics by becoming a
resident of Nebraska, Instead of South
Dakota.
The Missouri river Is cutting Into an
old channel on the east of the city, and
If th* waters succeed In getting Into
the old bed, Yankton will be thrown on
the west side of the river, and, there
fore, Into Nebraska.

board of equalisation In Columbia has
assessed the value of cotton mill prop,
ertlej In South Carolina at $48,000,000.
In 1805 the valuation waa $41,000,-
000, showing an Increase of $5,000,000 ln
one year.
Of the $48,000,000 valuation, $18,000,-
000 Is tn the three counties ot Green
ville, Spartanburg and Anderson.

receiver Ijoa just completed the digest
of taxable property of this county. The
Increase over that of lost year Is $1,-
408,808. The total amount of taxable

the tangled skein of matrimonial trou
bles that binds Halsey Corwin, eon of
the former comptroller of Brooklyn,
and Roberta O. Corwin, the daughter
of Morris Manges, of Sheepshead Bay,
la being unravelled. The latest devel
opment Is that the wife has taksn
steps to sue for a divorce on the
ground of her husband's relations with
several women, who are not named.
On July It Corwin suddenly discon
tinued his divorce ault against hta wife.
