Two Honored At Clayton State
Dawn Louise Rowan of Commerce and Heather Nicole Henson
of Jackson County were named to the fall 2007 dean’s list at Clayton
State University.
Students must carry nine credit hours and maintain a grade point
average of 3.6 or higher to make the dean’s list.
Jackson Electric Membership
Corporation (EMC) is taking
applications for three scholarship
awards based on academic abil
ity faculty recommendations and
financial need. Winners will be
chosen by a scholarship commit
tee, which will carefully review
each application in search of the
most qualified applicants.
The Walter Harrison Scholarship
is named for a leader in the state
and national electric coopera
tive movements. Several of these
$1,000 scholarships are awarded
statewide to undergraduate stu
dents enrolled in or accepted by
a Georgia college, university or
technical school.
Jackson EMC also offers two
additional $1,000 awards through
the A.T. Sharpton Scholarship
program, named in honor of a
late chairman of the Jackson
EMC Board of Directors. The
A.T. Sharpton-Gainesville State
College Award is available exclu
sively to students planning to
attend Gainesville State College.
Financial need is a primary con
sideration, but judges will also
consider academic average, stan
dardized test scores and/or fac
ulty recommendations.
The AT. Sharpton Unrestricted
Scholarship Award is funded
through the same trust but is pay
able to undergraduate or graduate
students enrolled in any accred
ited two- or four-year college or
university in the nation. Financial
need, academic average, standard
ized test scores and/or faculty
recommendations are all consid
ered equally by the judges.
Scholarship eligibility is restrict
ed to high school seniors who
have already been accepted
to college or students who are
currently enrolled in an accred
ited college, university or techni
cal college. Applicants may be
full- or part-time students at the
undergraduate or graduate level.
Scholarship recipients must be a
customer of Jackson EMC or the
son or daughter of a customer,
and they must also be a resident
of the home served by Jackson
EMC.
Students interested in applying
for any or all of these scholar
ships should contact their area
high-school guidance counsel
ors or complete the application
online at the Jackson EMC web
site. The deadline for applications
is Jan. 25.

Parliamentary Procedure Contest
East Jackson Middle School FFA Parliamentary Procedure

the Area II FFA Parliamentary Procedure Career Development
Event recently. The competition includes a written exam, oral
questions about assigned motions, the presentation of cer
tain motions and evaluation of the official meeting minutes
recorded by the team secretary.

Benton Elementary School media specialist Sharon Mitchell
read “Three Samurai Cats” to Heather Leffert’s third grade
class. The students used puppets to retell the story. Pictured

and Sharon Mitchell. “Three Samurai Cats” is a 2007-2008
Georgia Nominee book.
Celebrate 100th Day
Kindergarten students at Commerce Primary school recently
celebrated the 100th day of school. Students participated in
several activities that help them understand the concept of
100. Some of the activities included counting to 100 by 1 ’s, 5’s
and 10’s; counting sets of objects, reading books, and bring
ing in 100 small items. Some students dressed like they were

Gilman Wins 2nd In Creed Contest
East Jackson Middle FFA member Newt
Gilman recently placed second in the Area II
FFA Creed Career Development Event and
will advance on to state competition in April.
Participants must recite the FFA Creed from
memory and answer questions from the judg
es indicating familiarity with the subject and
the ability to think quickly. Participants are
judged on voice, stage presence, power of
expression, general effect and response to
questions.
Gilman, an eighth grader, is the son of Greg
and Charlotte Gilman, Commerce.

Hunter J. Roop of Commerce
has been named to the dean’s
list for the fall semester at
Coastal Carolina University,
Conway, SC.
To earn that honor, the
Commerce High School gradu
ate had to earn a 3.25 or better
grade point average as a full
time student.

Perform On GPB, At King Memorial
The Jackson County Comprehensive High
School Advanced Ensemble recorded and aired
live on National Public Radio and Georgia Public
Broadcasting recently. Terrance McKnight,
GPB’s radio host, invited the group to perform
on his radio show after hearing a recording
of the group. After recording at GPB’s Radio
Studios, the group traveled to the Martin Luther
King Memorial and performed a set of tradi
tional spirituals for the crowds that gathered at
the memorial.
