Commerce Grabs First Region Wins Of2008

against Woody Gap last week. Photo by Brandon Reed

It’s been a pretty good week
for the Commerce Tigers tennis
teams, starting with wins against
Woody Gap, a loss to Lakeview
and a split with Towns County.
Up next for the Tigers are
their final regular season match
es, as they host Tallulah Falls on
Thursday at 4 p.m.
Last Tuesday saw the Tigers
hosting Woody Gap, and com
ing away with their first region
wins of the season.
The girls’ team won 3-2, with
number three singles player
Sarah Leffew winning 6-4, 7-6.
Number one doubles pair Bree
Haggard and Maritza Martinez
won 6-0 and 6-3. Woody Gap
forfeited on the number two
doubles.
The boys won 4-1. Number
one singles player Yash Perekh
lost his first set 2-6, then won
6-1 and 6-4. Number two singles
player Kehne Brummette won
6-0 and 6-0. Woody Gap forfeit
ed on the number three singles.
Number two doubles pair Tyler
Adams and Trent Blalock won
6-1 and 6-4.
“We played pretty well and
are getting better,’’ said coach
Blake Rodenroth. “We just have
to tighten up a little and quit
making little mistakes that cost
us games and matches. I am
proud of the way our kids hang
in there and keep going. A lot
of people would have given up,
packed it in and headed for
home.’’
Next up for the Tigers was a
home stand against Lakeview
Academy. Commerce hoped
to carry some momentum into
Wednesday’s match, but it didn’t
work out that way, as Lakeview
defeated both the boys’ and the
girls’ teams 5-0.
Towns County traveled to
Commerce on Thursday, and
proved to be a different story
for the Tigers. The boys pulled
off an upset to get into the
region tournament by winning
3-2, picking up their second
region win.
Number two singles player
Kehne Brummette won 8-4,
while Number three singles
player Deep Patel won 8-3.
Number two doubles pair Trent
Blaylock and Tyler Adams won
8-6 with the match on the line.
Meanwhile, Quinn Evans won
his alternate match 8-2.
The story wasn’t as good for
the girls, as they lost 5-0 and are
still looking for a way to get into
the region tournament.
“I am really proud of all the
boys and girls,’’ Rodenroth said.
“It was a perfect day for tennis
and they went out, had fun, and
played pretty well. The boys
really stepped up. We lost the
first meeting against Towns 5-0,
and then to come back less than
a week later and beat them 3-2,
that is something to be proud
of.’’
Rodenroth said he hoped
the momentum would carry
over into this week. The Tigers
were scheduled to face Athens
Christian on the road on
Tuesday. Results of that match
were unavailable at press time.
Up next is a home match
against Banks County today
(Wednesday), followed by the
team’s regular season finale, at
home against Tallulah Falls on
Thursday.
If the boys win, they would
end up in third on their side of
the region behind Jefferson and
Lakeview. The girls, meanwhile,
will have to win against Tallulah
Falls if they want to make the
region tournament.

Tigers Defeat Cedar Shoals, Face Jackson County Friday
By Brandon Reed
The Commerce Tiger golf teams,
both boys and girls, recorded sec
ond place showings to Athens
Academy, before moving on to
wins over Cedar Shoals.
Up next for Commerce is a trip
to Highland Walk Golf Club to
face Franklin County and Hart
County on Thursday.
The Tigers started out last
week with good showings against
Athens Academy and Buford.
The boys finished second behind
Athens Academy, while the girls
finished second behind Buford,
scoring 167 to their 147.
Scoring for the boys were Taylor
Gary, 37, Casey Drinkard, 38, Sam
Purcell, 45, and Colton Dean, 47.
Austin Patterson carded a 48, and
Adam Hanley shot a 52.
“Athens Academy had an out
standing day,’’ said coach David
Stephenson. “They are really
good. I was well pleased with
our overall score, considering we
were without Hamp Gary, who
will miss two weeks as he is on a
trip to Israel. Taylor Gary played
outstanding from tee to green
and if a few putts had fallen he
could have gone low. His 37 was
a good score. I was thrilled with
Casey Drinkard shooting 38. If
we are going to have a chance
to go to state we will need that
kind of score from him. And he
is capable of going lower. He is
hitting it really well. Sam Purcell
has been close to posting a good
score. He is our most improved
golfer from last year. Colton also
is close to playing well. Overall I
am pleased with all of them.’’
For the girls, Chelsey Cain shot
a 48, C.J. Wilkes recorded a 52,
Camille Blair shot a 54, and Callie

Adams shot a 58.
“Our goal is to break 100 and
we are getting close,’’ Stephenson
said. “Chelsey is capable of shoot
ing 45 or better, as is CJ. Camille
played her best match. Callie has
been hitting the ball well but needs
to tighten up her short game.’’
Next up for the Tigers was a trip
to the Athens Country Club to
face Cedar Shoals. That resulted
in wins for both the boys and
girls, as the boys won 167-209,
and the girls won 110-126.
For the boys, Taylor Gary and
Drinkard both shot 39s, Dean
carded a 41, and Purcell finished
at 47.
“Colton played a really good
match,’’ Stephenson said. “He is
steadily improving. One-sixty-six
without Hamp on the Athens
Country Club course is not bad.
Taylor and Casey played steady
golf. Taylor mis-clubbed on one
hole because he was not familiar
with the course and it cost him
two shots. Casey had an eagle
on a par five hole, which really
helped his score. He is swinging
well. Sam did not score well but is
still close to having a really good
score.’’
For the girls, Cain shot a 54,
