Lady Eagles End Year On Strong Run

The East Jackson girls’ soccer
team wrapped up its first season
last week with an impressive late
season run, picking up four wins
in a row, as the Eagles defeated
Hart County, Eastside, Jackson
County and Elbert County.
The Lady Eagles ended their
season with a 7-9 overall record.
The only fly in the ointment was
being shutout in five attempts to
pick up the first region win.
Coach Bob Roller said while his
players were young, they learned
to hustle on every play towards
the end of the season.
“We got (freshmen Kassie Mull
and Dakota Chandler and junior
Bre Standridge) back from inju
ries and they helped our scoring
as well as our passing," Roller
said. “Moving Larisa Cozzens
from goalkeeper to forward gave
us another weapon in the front
and moving Abby Adams to
keeper helped us become more
athletically in goal."
Roller said the improved play
of the team’s defense with Katie
McEver, Sarah Daftarian, Sadie
Staples and Chelsea Kyst helped
keep the team in contention in
games later in the season.
'The determined play of Brittany
Blackwell in shutting down the
other team’s top forward and her
'no fear’ attitude in going after the
ball gave us a lot of possession
that we were not getting earlier in
the year," he said.
Roller said the wing play of
Aubrey Cozzens and Kassie Mull
with the middle play of Kayla
Sipes helped the scoring opportu
nities for forwards Jazmin Flores
and Dakota Chandler and kept
pressure on our opponents late in
season as the team learned how
to play together as well as com
municate.

Banks County
In the regular season finale,
the Eagles traveled to Banks
County, where the Leopards
outlasted them, 10-6.
“The kids played absolute
ly perfect," Robertson said.
“It’s no secret how well Banks
County swings the bat. The
game was really, really close,
and for us to keep it so close
for so long was really great."
Evan Williamson went 3-for-4,
Boswell scored a run, walked

2-3, Sam Williamson went

EJCHS Boys’ Soccer
East Jackson Boys Saw Improvement In '08
By Brandon Reed
The inaugural East Jackson
boys’ soccer season didn’t go
well, as the team ended its sea
son winless.
The final match, played April 4
at Franklin County, ended with
a loss, giving the Eagles an 0-9
season record.
Coach Matt Miner said the
team played great for periods of
time, but couldn’t maintain the
consistency it needed to win.
“We are young compared to the
varsity teams we played," he said.
“Most games we played like we
were younger with less experi
ence. Several games we had good
plans and stuck to those plans
but the other teams were older,
bigger, stronger and faster."
Miner said more than half of his
team had never played organized
soccer before.
“The goalies, Zac Pearson, John
Lawrence and Luke Derochers
did a great job this year and
came a long way. Defensively,
Michael Watson was our most
consistent. Zac Pearson played
several great aggressive games.
Kevin Kesler and Brandon Wise
were also very impressive defen
sively.
“Carlos Equarte played great
defense when he was healthy.
Ricardo Zaragoza was our lead
ing scorer and developed nice
ly throughout the season. Iliya
Bindyu played excellent all
over the field, he did a great
job at defense, midfield and at
forward. Brothers Alex and Jon
Love played hard every game
and improved constantly. Tony
Xiong, Victor Equarte and Eric
VanDeventer controlled the ball
well at midfield
