matrimony, let him now speak.”
That is the challenge of the old marriage
service. It is
happiness, have found it a blight to the
body, a martyrdom to the mind. The irreg
ular and painful periods of maidenhood
were looked upon as a part of the common
lot of woman, and so, neglected. Wife
hood brought with it debilitating drains,
and the trial of motherhood left an inflamed
and ulcerated condition of the womanly
organs. Then followed the slow decay of
body and mind ; the one tormented with
pain ; the other irritable, or despondent.
Science which cannot forbid the banns of
marriage, can undo these sad consequences.
It is the hand of science which offers af
flicted women that marvelous medicine,
Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription. It pos
itively cures irregularities, female weakness
and disagreeable drains on the system. It
allays inflammation and heals ulceration.
It makes the trial of motherhood easy and
brief. It brings back lost health and
beauty. “Favorite Prescription” contains
no alcohol, whisky or other stimulant.
Nothing is “ just-as good” for women as
the “Prescription.” Accept no substitute.

HE MEIGS SISTERS
SPLENDID QUARTETTE
Forth at Opera House
Night Before An
Last
The song recital by the Meigs Sisters
quartette, of New York, attracted
good sized crowd to the opera house last
night, and those that attended felt
riohly repaid for so doing.
The recital was nothing more nor less
than a musical treat which anyone with
love for music or with tastes and ideas
bordering upon the sethetic would have
enjoyed to the last degree.
The audience was very select and
really capable of enjoying the fine ren
ditions of high class music. They evi-
denced their approval by repeated en-
ohores to all of which the sisters re
sponded gracefnlly.
The Meigs Sisters came under the
auspices of the Star Lyceum Course,
this being the second attraction.
The next will be ex-Gov. Bob Taylor,
the humorist, orator and philosopher, in
whom is admirably blended all of those
attributes which go forward to make np
fine lecturer.
Grotesque Warriors.
Here is a fetching description of a
military review which we cull from
Mr. Harold Gorsts’ book on China:
“At one extremity of the field there
was raised on a slight elevation of the
ground a platform shaded by an Im
mense red parasol and ornamented
with lanterns, streamers and some
large lanterns that did not seem par
ticularly necessary, as the sun was
shining in full splendor. The inspector
extraordinary of the imperial army
and the principal civic and military
mandarins of the town were on the
platform, seated in armchairs before
little tables covered with tea things
and boxes filled with excellent tobacco.
The moment arrived to begin. A little
culverin that stood near the platform
was fired off, the military judges cov
ering their ears with, their hands to
protect them from the frightful detona
tion, then a yellow flag was hoisted to
the top of one of the forts, the tom
toms sounded a furious charge, and
the soldiers rushed together pellhiell,
uttering terrible cries and grouping
themselves around the flag of their
company.
It is Impossible to imagine any
thing more whimsical and comic than
the evolutions of the Chinese soldiers.
They advance, draw back, leap, pirou
ette, cut capers, crouch behind their
shields, as if to watch the enemy, then
jump up again; distribute ■'blows right
and left and then run away with all
their might, crying, ‘Victory, victory!’ ”

Santiago de Cuba, Nov. 6 —It turna
out that the wrecks of the warships of
Admiral Gervera’s squadron which re
main here are better than gold mines
for the wreckers. A party of the latter
has just begun to explore the wreck of
the torpedo boat destroyer Platon and
the first diver, it is reported, found
$4,000 in the parser's cabin. Last Tues
day some wreckers attempted to board
theCristcbol Colon, but found it al
ready occupied by another party, who
considered the wreck their property. A
fierce fight ensued, in whioh one man
was killed and several wounded.
Convicts Obsect to Stripes.
Santiago de Cuba, Nov. 6.—There
waa almost a riot in the Santiago prison
yesterday when the order was enforced
respecting the use of the convention; 1
convict uniform of stripes, with clipped
hair and clean shaven faces. The
prisoners flatly refused to comply, and
the prison officials were compelled to use
force. In several instances prisoners
were bound during the shearing opera
tions. All consider the new regulation
imposes the lowest degradation.
Top Cotton Ruined by Frost-
Washington.Ga, Nov. 6.—The heavy
frost of last night and Friday night
practically killed the upper growth of
cotton which has been so luxuriant and
fruitful in this section since the favora
ble season following the protracted dry
spell. A drive over six contiguous
counties reveals the fact that the second
growth would be spared long enough to
make some yield. Had the frost been
withheld two or three weeks longer this
hope would have been realized in some
degree in this section.

The Pronunciation Explained.
•There is a family In Virginia,” says
Collier’s Weekly, “the name of which
is spelled ‘Enrougbty,’ but It is pro
nounced ‘Darby.’ This fact, familiar
to many Americans, happened to be
told by Miss Hayward at a dinner in
London at which Mr. Kipling waa
present, when he broke in: ‘You have
saved my reputation by telling that
You are the first man, woman or child
who could back me up in it’
‘The explanation of the peculiarity Is
that the Derbys were an English fami
ly who settled In Virginia In the colo
nial days. One of the sons, the tradi
tional black sbeep of the family, waa
left a share In his father’s will on con
dition that be changed his name; ' He
changed his written name to En
rougbty, but continued to call himself
Derby.
"On bearing this explanation Mr.
Kipling said, ‘I think I wlU change my
name to Smith.* *You can spell it
Smith If you like,’ was the reply, ‘but
it will always be pronounced Kipling,'
a remark which caused him to look ‘as
unfelgnedly pleased as a boy.’ ”
