Caro of Ibe Eyes.
It is Injurious to ruli tho eyes while In
flamed by the cutting winter winds and
and the dust raised thereby, mid otjuiilly
'so to bathe them and go out immediately
tipalu in the uir, os then there is danger
of duelling a cold. A prominent optician
declares that most of tho eye troubles at
this season aro caused by imprudence in
nibbing or bathing. Ho also suys that
in rubbing tho eyes tho tear line from tho
outside to the nflec should bo followed,
though the majority pass tbo fingers from
the inside out, which, bo asserts, affects
th- 6ight and produces crows’ feet. Tho
ladies will assuredly heed the last state
ment.—New York Times.
. A Moonless Month!
Tho month of February, 1860. was in
ono respect tho most remarkable in the
world's history. It ,liad no full moon.
January hml two full moons and so hod
March, but February had none. Do you
realize what a rare tiling in nature that
was? It had not occurred sinco tho
time of Washington, nor since tho dis
covery of America, nor sinco tho begin-
. ning of the Christian era, nor the crea
tion of tho world. And it will not occur
tagain, according to tho computation of
astronomers, for—how long do you
think?—2,300,600 years. Was not that
truly a wonderful month?—Golden Days.
Mplos That Carry a Tan.
At Oenoa I saw a train of a dozen don
keys loaded with iron for the improve
ment of tho street railway. Tho iron
■was tied across tho donkeys' backs the
'long way, and tho woight would have
been considered a good load for two
horses in America. It is not uncommon
to seo a ' donkey carrying a load of rail
road bars weighing 2,000 pounds, and a
ton is not a small wagon load in most
countries.—Cor. Philadelphia Times.
An Alaskan Winter Day.
The shortest days are passed, and we
will now seo old Sol’s sloping face n few
minutes longer each day. On tho 22d
the siui roso at 8:40 a. m., hugged close
to tho top of the peaks crowning Douglas
island, disappeared from sight at 1:10
p. m. At 8:40 darkne& sets in and
lamps are lighted.—Alaska Free Press.
Miirrlugo In Great Britain.
Britain seems to have arrived at a point
of her civilization similar to that reached
years ago by France, when the incrcaso
of native imputation begins diminishing.
Tiiat is shown by tho rapid decrease of
tho number of marriages. In 1838 there
were 17.9 marriages to every 1,000 in
habitants; in 1885 there were only 14.4,
and in 1880 only 14.1 to 1,000.—Foreign
Letter.
Llfo Insurance Statistics.
- Statistics of the lifo insurances show
that there are now 820,000 policies in
this country, representing an aggregate
insurance of $.2,100,000,000. Duringtho
past year more tlmn $400,000,000 of now
insurance was written, and more than
$70,000,000 distributed among policy
holders in death, endowment and divi
dend payments.—New York Evening
World.
Workers In Copper.
Though workers In copper seldom suf
fer any ill health from their work, vet
the particles of tho mineral enter their
iy6tcm so as to completely saturate them
in process of time. Some old copjKT-
erniths have had their hair turn green in
stead of gray, and their bones have been
found green after death.—Chicago News.

ball to-night, dear.
Daughter—Yes, mamma.
Utah Mother—And you must bo as
pleasant os possible. Mr. Brighnm is tho

Russia's National Hymn.
Tho Russian national anthem, “God
Protect the Czar, "was first performed
at the Grand theatro, Moscow, in De
cember, 1833. Provious to this there had
j?een no national hymn in Russia., and

says: ” Ayer’s Cathartic Fill* are highly
