A PHYSIOLOGICAL QUESTION.
With Man KM«Mp or fkyiM hv,
Life May lie Kxtandrd tndafinlUly.
Tho food that man takes Into til*
ttomnch ought to bo of such quantity and
quality as would exactly repair tho loam
which, through the action of tho several
organs, his body is to undergo. If, it is
excessive in either of thno directions, or
if it is deficient disease of some kind wiU
certainly bo tho result If ho knew
enough tobe able to adjust his daily food
to tho expected dnHy requirements of his
system disease could nover ensue through
die exhaustion of anyone of his vital
organs.
Suppose, for instance, that a man ris
ing in the morning should say to himself:
•‘Today I have to read ten pages of
•Blackstono’s Commentaries,’ twenty
pages of ‘Don Quixote,’ Jo warn
three miles and a half, to pay a visit of
half an hour’s duration to my grand
mother and to take my sweetheart to tho
theatre, where I shall spend two hours;
to do this I require (taking out his pencil
and memorandum book as he speaks) go
much carbon, so much nitrogen (giving,
of course, the exact weight of these
several elementary substances). I can
get those precise quantities from eight
ounces of bread, four ounces of eggs,
eight ounces of beef, six ounces of pota
toes, four ounces of fish, a half pint of
beef soup, eight ounces of water and
eight ounces of strong coffee to make
them go a little further than they other
wise would.
Now suppose that he is exactly right
in his calculations, and that the food
taken is neither too great nor too little,
hut exactly compensates the anticipated
losses, the death of each cell in the brain
or the heart or the muscles, etc., will be
followed by the birth of a new' cell
which will take its place and assume its
functions. Gout, rheumatism, liver and
kidney diseases, heart affections, soften
ing and other destructive disorders of the
brain, tho various morbid conditions to
which the digestive organs are subject,
would be impossible except through the
action of some external force, such os the
swallowing of sulphuric acid or a blow
on tho head or a t-1;.! > v i 1 ’ i a knife, which
would como cleat iv " lUiin the class of
accidents, and of n aivse many of these
would bo avoidable.
Again, let us imagine that man know
just to what extent his animal appetites
should bo gratified, that ho had ascer
tained definitely to what extent, if at all,
alcohol and tobacco and other stimulants
and sedatives should bo used, that his
knowledge in regard to clothing were
perfect, that l;p had acquired complete
information of the manner in which his
house should be built and heated and
ventilated and otherwise bo made sani
tarily perfect, that cookery had become
one of the exact sciences, that ho was
able to avoid the effects of extremo heat
and cold and moisture, that, in a.word,
he had nothing to learn in regard to the
best tray of living so as to preserve him
self from all morbific causes—supposing
nil this (and I admit that it is not very
likely that he will for ages upbn ages
acquire the almost God like omniscience
necessary), death would bo impossible
and tho eternal life to which we are told
ho was born would again be bis.—Dr.
’William A. Hammond in Philadelphia

Practical Socialism In Switzerland.
Tiicro is much more government in
Switzerland than with us, and much less
play of individuality. In small com
munes, for example, liko Villeneuve,
there are features of practical socialism,
which have existed apparently from tho
earliest times. Certain tilings are held in
common, ns mountain pasturage and the
forests, from which encli family has a
provision of fuel. Theso' and other
possessions of tho communo nro “con
fided to tho publio faith,” and trespass is
punished witli signal severity.
The trees are felled under government
inspection, and the woods are never^ut
off wliolesalo. When a treo is chopped
down a treo is planted, and tho floods
that ravngo Italy from tho mountains
denuded of their forests are unknown to
tho wiser Swiss. Throughout Switzer
land tho state insures against fire and in
flicts penalties for neglect and careless
ness from which fires may result. Edu
cation is compulsory, and there is a rigid
military service, and a bIiow of publio
force everywhere which is quite unknown
to our unneighbored, easy going republic.
