NEW RED NECKTIE
The other day a glorious vision
of color filled the Senate chamber.
The roseate hues with which Honor
ushers in the eventful days of the
Iliad were pale and wan in com
parison. The gorgeous trappings of
the Turk, the sensuous tints which
delight the eye in the land of the
Algerian, the ruddy glow of Vesu
vius against the darkness of a mid
night sky, would fail to afford
even a faint idea of the corusca
tion which burst upon the startled
eyes of an unprepared Senate. A
lambent flame, as it were, illumin
the historic chamber, and even the
darkest recesses of Senator Peffer’s
whiskers reflected back the glory
of the unwonted fire.
Senator Blackburn wore a brand
new red necktie.

THE HUSTLER OF ROME.FRIDAY DECEMBER.2I 1894,
NAUGHTY LETITIA.
Ran Away From Mamma and Join
ed Her Sailor Lad.
New York, December 20.—Mrs.
M. Thompson went to Brooklyn to
day to search for her daughter
Letitia, who had left her home at
No. 818 West Forty-third street,
this city. She had heard that the
girl was secreted on the yacht Mo
hican, which was about to sail for
England.
Judge Walsh issued a warrant,
which was given to Officer Train .
lie went to the foot of Twentieth
street, but the vessel was gone.
He learned that the girl had been
on the vessel, but had been put off
by order of the owner, Dr. He’rring.
Letitia had been brought on board
‘the ship by a member of the crew
who refused to ship when he learn
ed that the girl had been put
ashore.
Miss Thompson is 17. She used
to be a sales-girl at one of the big
dry- goods stores, and afterward
went to work for Mr. Herring's
wife. A week ago Mrs. Thompson
boarded the yacht and forced her
daughter to return to this city with
her. On the way home she gave her
mother the slip. It is not knovn
where she is now.

PLUCKY TEACHER
Organizes a Poss and Captures a
School Girl’s Assailant.
Wheeling, W. Va., Dec. 20. —
Near Salem, this morning while
Miss Annie Custer, a girl 16 years
of age was on her way to school,
she was criminally assaulted by an
unknown man.
The teacher of the school arrived
immediately after, and on being
informed of the occurrence, organ
ized a posse and went in pursuit of
Miss Custer’s essailaut.
After a two hours’ search, fol
lowed by a desperate battle, in
which several shots were fired, no
body being hurt, the man was cap
tured. There is. talk of lynching
to-night, but it is thought wiser
counsel will prevail and the law
will be allowed to take its course.
The girl is badly injured.
DESERTED WIFE
Wabash, Ind., Dec. 20, —Today

the charge of inducing her hus
band, Roy Gebler, son of defend
ant, to leave her in Denver, Colo.,
on November 27, 1893, by threats
of disinheritance, promises and
persuasion. Mr. Gebler in his an

he never married the girl, and
that he left her of his own free
will. The defendant asks judge
ment for costs and ether proper
relief.
