r COTTON. —During the past week, we have had a stea

Was prevented transactions to any extent, taking place.
I Holders still show but little disposition to sell at present
prices, while buyers seem disposed to operate for manu
facturing and shipping purposes, but cannot find the ar
ticle to operate in. Since the receipt of the advices
from Europe, per Arctic, prices have advanced in this
market, all of j of a centj but even at this advance,
there are few or no sellers, the bulk of the stock on
hand being held by planters, who seem disposed to
await the product of the present planting, before dis
posing of last year's crop. The only large lot that has
been disposed of this week, that has come to our knowl
edge, was 67 bales of Middling Fair, all but six bales, at
8 cents. This sale is the best ind«c we can, at present,
give of prices in this market. If more Cotton was offer
| hig, we do not think the same quality would bring the
same price.

GROCERIES.—We have very little alteration to no
tice in prices in the Grocery Hue siuce our last publica
tion. further than an improvement in the price of Ba
con. The stocks of our Merchants are daily on the in
crease. and when the Fall business ,«ets in, the stock of
Goods in Augusta will l>e found large and better assort
ed than for a number of years past. Merchants from
the interior have now a better opportunity of examin
ing tb* Augusta market than they have enjoyed since
the Georgia Rail Road has been in operation. They
can now take the night train from any point from At
lanta and arrive in Augusta in time for the Charleston
cars, and still have sufficient time, in Augusta, to ex
amine our market before going further. All our Mer
chants ask of those of the interior, is, if you can go to
Charleston or New York and do better, do so; but give
us a call before you go elsewhere, or you will not know
our prices for the same articles.
BACON.—There is a good demand for Sides, and prices
still tend upwards. Holders arc now asking 11 cents
cash for Ribbed Sides by the small quantity, and 11} a
11} on time. For clear Sides 11} al2 cents is asked, ac
cording to quality and quantity. From stores Sides are
selling at 12 a 12} cents at retail—Shoulders at 9} a 10,
and Hams at 13 a 14 cents per lb.
LARD.—Good Lard is very scarce and is now worth
by the keg 13 a 14 cents. A common article by the
bbl. is worth 11} a 12 cents.
BAGGING.—rThere is less doing in Bagging than we
have had to notice at this season of the year for some
years past. Holders, however, are stiff, and refuse to
sell, by wholesale under 15 cents for Gunny. By re
tail from store, it is selling at prices rangiug from 15} to
to 16 cents. *
BALE ROPE.—The stock of Kentucky on hand is on
the increase, and sales are making at 8} to 9} cents, by
the small quantity.
FLOUR.—We have on hand a fair supply of Northern
which is dull of sale. Augusta Canal sells readily at
s7} to 8 per bbl. for new Wheat, and $6 to 7} for old.
WHEAT.—Prime White is in domnnd at $1,25 per
bushel; good now Red sl.
CORN.—The supply is fully equal to the demand.—
Sales have been reported to us this week of about 1500
sacks at prices ranging from a $1 to $1,5 per bush
el by the quantity—-the latter price for good grinding
Corn. By retail the prico is $1 10 a $1 12 cents per
bushel. Corn Meal is selling at $1 25 per bushel.
POTATOES, Ac.—Sales have been reported to us this
week of Northern at prices ranging from $3 to $3 50
per bbl.—market well supplied. Onions havo been sold
at $2 50 a 3 per bbl.
COFFEE. —Tho supply on hand is light, but there is
plenty on the way, and daily expected. We quote Rio
at 10 a 11 cents.
MOLASSES —Fair stock of Cuba on hand, which is
selling by the hhd. at 25 a26 ceuts. New-Orloans is
still scarce, and is worth 40 cents per gallon.
SUGARS.—We hare no material change notice in
prices, although tho stock is light. If any thing, prices
arc looking up.
SALT.—Stock on tho decrease, and prices advancing.
We have no wholesale transactions to notice. From
stores, sales are making at $1,20 a $1,25 per sack.
EXCHANGE —We liavo no change to notice in tho
rates for Northern Exchange, which continue at } pe
cent. prom, for Sight Checks on Now-York and other
Northern cities. On Charleston and Savannah our
Banks are drawing at par.
FREIGHTS.—The River is raising and light draft boats
can come up to tho wharf. We have no change to no
tice in rates, which continue at 50 cents per bale to
Savannah and Charleston.
SAVANNAH, Aug. 19.— Cotton. —The sales yes
terday amounted to 57 bales, at tho following par
ticulars:—6 at 5, 26 a 6, 14 at 7 5-16, and 11 bttlos
