SWEET OPOPONAX ! New . Perfume from
Mexico The only fashionable Perfume
and Ladies’ delight, dold at the Drug Store
of [octOtf] Dr. E. J. ELDUIDGE.
Our Millinery Establishments. —
We have had the pleasure of taking a
bird’s eye view of tlie beautiful stock of
goods brought out by the Ladies who
preside over these establishments, in our
city, and must say that they are the
handsomest ever brought to the place.
Ladies of such fine taste certainly de
serve a large share of patronage from
those for whom their goods were spe
cially intended. In the way of Ladies
Hats and Bonnets, they have the very
latest styles, and we would advise our
lady frieuds who want something nice
for the head to go at once and procure
one of the “ Catiline” Hats, which we
think deqjdedly the sweetest and most
delicate hat of the season. It would be
a vain effort in us to attempt to convey
an idea of the unique, elegant, and su
perb styles exhibited at their establish
ments. At them may be found also the
latest and finest style of Feathers for
Ilats and Bonnets, all kinds of dress
Trimmings, Ornaments, Ribbons, Flow
ers, and a great many other fine things
that an Editor knows nothing about.
These articles may be found at either
of the stores of Mrs. Wright, on the
West side of the square, Mrs. Hawks on
the East side, a few doors above the
Republican Office, or at Mrs. Mapp’s at
the store of G. M. Hay. Give them a

Admitted to the Bar. —Our young
friend, Charles F. Crisp, of Ellaville,
was on Tuesday last, admitted to prac
tice law in the Superior Courts of this
State. We were not present at his ex
amination, but learn that he acquitted
himself in a very creditable manner, and
gave indubitable evidence of his qualifi
cations to practice, to both Judge and
bar.
j The City Clock. —We are pleased to
state that the committee appointed to
purchase the clock have succeeded in
making the purchase, and they are now
engaged in procuring the services of a
competent mechanic to put it up. It is
the opinion of the committee that the
work will be completed and the clock
be put in running order in the course of
two or three weeks. This is good news.
Hurry tlie work up, gentlemen.

South Western Circuit. —lt may
not be generally known that an elec
tion for Solicitor General of this Circuit,
is to take place in January next, at the
same time as that for the election of
a Judge. A candidate for tlie office of
Judge is before the people in the per
son of Peter J. Strozier, Esq. of
Albany. As yet we have heard of no
one offering for Solicitor General. In
the absence ot any other name, we take
the liberty of suggesting that of our
fellow citizen, N. A. Smith, Esq. as a
gentleman every way qualified for the
duties of the office. We do this not
knowing whether that gentleman would
accept tlie position if tendered him.
He acted in the capacity of Solicitor
General at the Superior Court just closed,
and it will bo seen from the proceedings
that he was succesful in convicting
every criminal that came before the
Court for trial. We think lie will make
an efficient officer and for that reason
take the liberty of suggesting his name.

35?“ Judge Alexander, of the Circuit
Court of Maryland, has decided that
greenbacks are not legal tender in pay
ment of debts, and that the Act of
Congress rendering them such, is “ un
constitutional and void,” in this case
the party purchasing tendered the
amount in legal tender notes of the
United States. It was contended that
he was alone entitled to his conveyance
upon paying the amount in gold and
silver coin of the United States.
Judge Alexander, after argument,
held that tlie Act of Congress in re
lation to making greenbacks a legal
tender was unconstitutional and void,
an assumption of power not granted bv
tlie State to their agent, the General
Government, and that Congress could
not, upon its volition, convert paper
issue into an equivalent for gold and
silver. »
The legality of tlie Act is disputed
upon two grounds: First, That it is in
itself, as applicable to all cases, with
out warrant of law and invalid; and,
Secondly, That under any circumstan
ces it cannot apply or be of force in
reference to debts contracted before its
passage. (Mont. Advr.)
