BRITONS KNOCKED OUT.
Flying Squadron is Almost Annihilated
by the Natives of Somaliland
in East Africa.
The British transport Harding ar
rived at AtK-n, Arabia, Thursday from
Berbera, iho capital of Somaliland,
East Africa, and confirmed the report
■of a British defeat in Somaliland. The
officers of tlie Harding say that ton
officers end ISO men out of a total
British force of 220 men were killed
recently in an engagement with So
malis.
Details of Disaster.
The war office in London, Thursday,
received from Brigadier General Man
ning in command of the British forces
in Somaiiland, a dispatch dated 20
miles westward of Galadi, Somaliland,
dated April 18, in part as follows:
“I regret to report that a flying col
uma, under the command of Colonel
Cobbe, which left Galadi, April 10
to covqL the road to Walwal, had a
most senous attack April 17.
‘ The news has been fully corrobo
rated since and I Have to report the
total loss of Colonel Plunkett’s party,
with the exception of thirty-seven
Yao3, who have arrived here.
Fugitives Tell the Story.
"The story of the fugitives is to the
effect that Colonel Plunkett pushed on
after the enemy’s forces to the open
country, seven miles westward of
Gum burnt, where he was attacked by
a strong force of mounted troops and
tlie enemy’s infantry, which attacked
at close quarters. He lcept back the
enemy until he had no more ammuni
tion. when he formed a quaro and
charged with bayonets in tne direction
of Colonel Cohbe’s seareba. He moved
some distance in this manner, but a
great, many men, including Colonel
Plunkett himself, were killed or
wounded. At last the enemy’s infan
try overwhelmed the square and anni
hilated them all with the exception of
the thirty-seven fugitives above men
tioned.”
The dispatch closes with a list of
tlie officers and men missing, a.nd, no
doubt, killed in action, namely Colonel
A. W. V. Plunkett, Captains Johnstone.
Atewart, Olivey Norris and McKin
non and Lieutenants Gaynor and Bell,
all of the King's African Rifles; Cap
tain Vizoy, of the Second Sikhs; Cap
tain Sims, of the India medical staff;
two privates, forty-eight men of the
Second Sikhs and 121 men of the Afri
can Rifles. Two Maxim guns were also
lost.
Ten persons, eight men and two
j women, were killed by an explosion at
I the plant of the Northwestern Star Oil
j Company, in Minneapolis, Minn., about
11:30 o’clock Thursday morning.
The dead are: W. H. Davis, presi-
1 dent; C. II. Durbin, general manager;
; Stanislaus W. Mitchell, cashier; Jacob
j Domin, bookkeeper; Miss Caroline A.
Record, bookkeeper : Harold C. Col-
born, stenographer; David Dncey, fore :
i man; John Stontar.ske and Joseph La
Fond, laborers.
The explosion came without an in
stant's warning, and a second after
tlie concussion the walls had been
thrown down and the entire structure
was a mass of flames, aol a person
in the office oscaped alive.
Five workmen engaged on the sec
ond floor were thrown twenty feet into
the air and these were the only per-
! sons who escaped. They climbed
through the debris and are now at
■ the city hospital.
Although the cause o* the explosion
lias not been determined, it is said
: that some of ihe employees of the com
pany were emptying some oil tank
1 cars into the tanks in the basement of
| the building and it is possible that
i sparks from a switch engine ignited
j the inllamablo fluids,
j Several explosions followed in quick
succession and made the work of tlie
firemen difficult and dangerous. The
men could not approach the ruins, and
I the water thrown on the flames was
j without, effect. The department, could
not do anything hut allow the flames
j to burn themselves out and then
; search for the bodies of the dead.
At a late hour Thursday night three
! bodies had been recovered, those of
i Domm and Misses Roundy and Record.
I The stork was valued at. $40,000 and
( the building at. $15,000. The insurance
was $23,000, and the loss is total. All
that remains of the building is a lire
| wall which stood between tne office
j and the tank room. All tho other
I walls are levelled.
Since the great mill explosion o r
i 1S7S, tliis is the greatest disaster that
: has been experienced in Minneapolis.

that attempts had been made to bribe
him wore formally made later as an
explanation of the extraordinary ac
tions on his part, which procipitated
the riot. The interior of the legisia-

the track of a tornado, so general was
the wreckage of chairs and desks.
