Tlic Drml Trumpeter.
rr t. k. her. t.y.
kc, soWLr! vako’ thy m horso wails.
To ’ thee to the 1 nine bark;
i no it sltifnbarwk at & fo‘:o u ► un**.
Thy dog would break thy blvouw;
Tby plume is trailing iu tho dust,
And tliv rod fnlchi. n gathering dust l
Sleep, soldier, sleep ! thy warfare o’er—
Not thine own bugle’s loudest strain
Shall e'er break thy el umbers more,
AA'ith summons to the battle plain;
A trumpet note more loud and deep',
Must rouse thee from that leaden sleep!
Thou nco*l'st not helm nor cu’.ratts now,
Beyond the Grecian hero’s boast,
Thou wilt not quail tliy naked brow,
Nor shrink before a myriad hod;
For head and heel alike are sound,
A thousand arrows cannot wound.
Thy mother is not in thy dreams.
With that wild, widowed look Pho Wore.
The day—how long to her it seems!
She kissed the. 1 at the cottage door.
And sickened at tho sounds of j
Thut bore uway her <>uly boy ‘
Sleep, soldier, sle&f ! let thy mother wait,
To hoar th# bugle on the bluet;!
Thy dog. perhaps, may find thy gate,
Amt bid her home t*> tli**o at la*t.
He cannot tell a sadder tale
Than did tby clarion on the gale.
AYhen last—and fir uway—she heard
Its lingering ©chocs fail.
Tlic Flogging of Prince.
Th*? London corrospun lent of :t North German
ptpjr relates a story with regard to tho way in 1
which Prince Albert disciplines liis children,
which the Tribune translates as follows :
“The young prince stood one day in his room ,
in tho royal palace at Windsor, at tho window,
whose panes reached ( the Boor. He had a 1
lesson to learn by heart, but instead was ninu- j
sing himself by looking out into tho gardens I
and playing with bis ling *rs on the window.
His governess, Miss Ilillyard, an earnest and
piuus person observed this, and kindly asked
him to think of getting h:s lesson. The young
prince said: ‘I don’t we it to.’ ‘Then,’ said
Mi-s Ilillyard, ‘l must put you in tho corner.’
‘I won't loam,’ answered the little fellow reao- j
lately, ‘and won't stun l ;n the corner, f>r l am
tho Prince of Wales.’ And as he said this, he
knocked out one of tho wind w panes with his
foot. At this, Miss Ilillyard rose from her seat
and said: ‘Sir, you mu3t Lam, or l must put ‘
you in tho corner.’ I ‘won’t said he, knocking
out a second pane. The governess then rang,
nnd told tho servant who entered to say to
Prince Albert that she roque.-ted tho presence
of his Royal Highness immediately on a press
ing matter connected with his son. Tho de
voted father Caine at once, and heard the st.ito- 1
inent of tho whole matter, after which ho turn- 1
eJ to his little son, and said, pointing to an !
ottoman, ‘sit down th_*ro, and wait till 1 return.’
Then Prince Albert went to hid room ami
brought a bible. ‘Listen, now,’ ho ‘ail to the
Prince of Wales, Ho what the holy Apostle Paul
pays to you and other children in your position.’
Hereupon he read (lalat. iv. 1 and 2: •N’ w 1
say that the heir, so ns ho is a child, <1 if
fereth nothing from n orv.int, though he he h
loved of all; but is under tutors and governors
until tho time appointed of tlio father.’ ‘lt is
true,* continued Prince Albert, ‘that you are
Prince of Wales, and if you properly
you may become a man of high station, itn.i
even after tho death t your mother, may be
come King of England. But now youa.ro a lit
tlo boy, whomugtobey your tutors and governor**.
Besides, I must impress upon you anot h*y; Bi, Y’
log, of tho wise Solomon, in Proverb-’ \m. J I :
‘Ho that sparoth his rod, hateth h*’ he
that loveth him eliastonth him betimes. IL i
upon tho father took out ap'd and gave the
heir to the throne of the weightiest emp-n* of;
Christendom a very p 1 switching, an 1
then stood him up in t h , ‘ corner, sayir. ‘ mi
will stand hero an-’ s * u dy your lesson till Mi -
Ilillyard gives ** u leave to come out. Vn.lin. ver
forget a<'uii) you nrti u ,w und r tutors and
governors an that hereafter you will be under
a law frXen by God.” This a ids, tho corres-
on excellent Chris tain in do ofedu
iwit'un, which every citizen and peasant who has
a cAild may well take to his heart is a model. j
It may be proper to add that the youngster
who is represented to have received this pater
al admonition is but 11 years old.
