A correspondent of the Oglethorpe Democrat, j
gives the following interesting account of tho
“run off ’ nt Butler on the Ist inat, by which
our guests from Columbus were dolayed for
several hours, while cn route to this city:— I
•• Bi.Tt.rn, June Ist, 1853.—This morning at
about 7 o’clock, the special train of curs from ,
Columbus to Savannah, arrived at this place !
with about 250 passengers, on their way to £uv- !
an nah, to celebrate tha ‘lion Nuptials’ of the
two cities, aad after passing the switch, the
cow-catcher como in contact with aotno planks
that were lying inside tho track ns a part of a
bridge, at a crossing place, and turned them di
agonally across the truck, by which the engine
and tender, baggage and smoking cars, were
thrown from tho track. The engine received
but slight damage, but tho tender, baggage and
smoking cars are much damaged. Five passen
ger cars wero attached to the train, none of
which received any injury. Fortunately, no j
lives were lost—nono were seriously injured.
There were several negroes in the smoking car, !
who made their escape by leaping out through
the windows—and a fortunate leap it was, a*
the car was completely smashed, about one half |
its length. The courage of the Engineer is al !
most without a nrccodent—he remained at his
post, holding on to tho engine, until he had
succeeded iu stopping tho train. Mr. Wadloy,
tho renowned Superintendent of the Central |
Rail Road, and Mr. Kicker, the Superintendent
of the Muscogee Road, were both present, and
! evinced their skill for any emergency, by their ;
tact in “righting up” matters. While others
1 worelooking on in terror and surprise, and con
sulting as to what could be done, these worthy
superintendents immediately set to work, and in
a few minutes had the road cleared, tho track
re-laid, and ready for the cars. At half past II
I o’clock, the regular train from Columbus came
down, and attaching the unlucky train toils
j own, moved triumphantly on its route, with
about three hundred passengers aboard.
