Wednesday Afternoon, June 8, 1853.
JST* We shall publish to-morrow a very in
teresting article on tho llot-Air Engine of Capt.
Ericsson, which has been delayed in conse
quence of our inability to havo the diagrams
which illustrate it, engraved. Extra copies of
the paper containing it may be had at the office,
aud of the carriers.
£s£r Our up-town neighbor, iu a very nat
tering notice this morning,of Putnam's Monthly,
Ly-the-bye a most excellent magazine, holds
the following language:
“ Putnam's Monthly must eventually boa
welcome, regular and indispensable vi: itor at
every literary boudoir.”
We suppose a literary boudoir is tho place \
whero “ blue stockings ” are put on.
Kail Rond of Lift-.
We deeply regret to learn, by a dispatch re* !
ceived by a gentleman in this city, that a seri- j
ous accident occurred last night on the Macon
A Western Road, while tho passenger train was
on its way to Macon. Tho train canto in colli
sion with two cows which were on tho truck—
the passenger car was thrown off, down an em
bankment, and dashed to atom?. The mail
guard was instantly killed, and five passengers
seriously injured ; among them, the Hun. Alex
ander H. Stephens. No blame is attached to
those in charge of the train. The passenger
car only, was thrown off the track.
The dispatch from which wo gather thenbovo
particulars, is dated Macon, June S, 9 o’clock,
A. M., and is signed by tho President of tho
Macon A Western Road.
Knll-Xloatl Meeting.
The meeting of the subscribers to the propos
ed Savannah an<l Gulf Kail Rond convened at

i/ed by calling His lion. 11. Wayne, to the

and are hereby appointed and requested to act
ns a provisional Board of Directors, viz :

form the following services, viz:

progress of their w ork.
The resolutions were unanimously adopted.
On motion the meeting adjourned.
R. WAYNE, Chairman.
A. A. Smetts, Secretary.
Modernizing the Rxrlinngc.
This subject, which wc have so often brought
to the attention of our readers, has been under
the consideration of the City Fathers, but wc
regret to say that the amount required, $13,000,
is thought too largo to warrant a change for tho
present. Whoever has attended a public meet
ing in tho mis called Long Room of the Ex
change, and stood there for hours, first upon
ono leg, and then upon tho other, trying to
catch a word here, a word there, with a view to
the exorcise of one's ingenuity in linking these
odd words together, and with a vain hope that
they will sound like something, when so linked
whoever wc say, has thus been situated, would
Be likely to vote in favor of a now City Hall; or
at least would favor the putting up of a shed or
tent, where public meetings might bo held, and \
those who attend them thus enjoy some comfort. I
Every body knows that public meetings in tlu* j
Kxchango are tho smallest sort of gatherings : j
tho other day at a town meeting, one million of j
dollars was subscribed to a rail road scheme, by :
about four dozen citizeus, representing the town*
Ono reason why these meeting? are so small, i:
unquestionably owing to the fact, that the room i
in which they are held, is so outrageou.-ly un
comfortable. We advocate, therefore, anew
City Hall, in addition to the new Market, and
new Hotel, which wo have* previously toiled
for. Appropriation is now the vogue let’s see
a sow thousands spent in direct city improve
ment.
Stone Crossings.
Tho powers that bo are looking into the pro
priety of planting stone cre.-sings in Whitaker
and Hull-streets, and we presume will report
progress at their convenience.
Marrying and Dancing.
Tho Presbyterian General Assembly, in
session at Buffalo, bad under its consideration
several subjects of general interest and itnpor- {
Lance. Among other questions upon which the
body took actiou, was the following: -
Is it allowable for a church me mb■ • to mnrrg
the daughter of his eish r—h nit >
This was answered in tho negative, and in
opposition to tho report of I>r. Cox. The Doc
tor held the following positions :
“Ist. That what is either lawful or positively
forbidden may be a different matter, and often
is a very different one from vvliat. i-. • ;■ di< nt.
“2d. No legislation by tho church can bind
tho conscience of a man, and God du o* not for
bid tho relation.
“3d. Nearest of kin should always bo pre
ferably avoided.
“4th. That the proper liberty of individuals
<>n the subject of marriage should be carefully
guarded and established, as well as all tho vio
lations of Divine laws sacredly prevented.
“oth. No forfeiture of church standing ought
to result from tho mere circumstance of the
akj/ relation.”
This logic failed however to convince the As
sembly, and the Doctor lust the question.
The Assembly thon considered the f !1 >wing
question: Is it consistent for a church mbe.r
to engage in promiscuous dancing f This was
decidod also in the negative. We confess, that
w o do not exactly understand the term promis
cuous, in the question. We suppose it mean
that it is not consistent in a church member to
dance with all sorts of people, in all sorts of
places. Or perhaps it has reference to tho dif
ferent kinds of dances m voghe. It may be a
hit at the Redowa or Polka, tho Schottishe, or
JVlnzourka.
If by “prornia •nous” is meant all sorts of
dances, it is unfortunato that the A c sombly did
not use more precision, and specify which
dances were, and were not allowable, for church
members. They have left the choice of dances
to tho members thomselves, whereas the sole
intent of considering the question at all, was
to lay down a rule for their guidance. Vi e
should really like to seo the list of fashionable
dances overhauled, and the proper, set aside
from the improper. Tho world at present seems
to have no definite notions on this subject, and
is evidently of opinion that whatever i fash
ionable is proper —a doctrine too much like
Ropes, “whatever is, is right," —and from which
ws dissent in toto.
Revenge is certainly a very unamiable
attribute, but we confess that our nature is so
human, we could not but look with pleasure up
on any measure wbioh wouldenablo the South
ern States to wring a few regrets from Mr.
Bull for his abuse of us and our institutions.—
Blind as a bat to the miseries, that arc piled in !
mountains around his very feet—deaf as a post |
to tho cries of hunger, and want, that daily sa- j
lut* his ears from tho hovels of his own estate, j
he has only eye and car for these tilings when
they can be beard or espied across an ocean.— j
He pretends to see much rnisory over the At- 1
lan tic, and is greatly affected thereby. His
grief is so bitter that it turns to gall, and in
stead of breaking forth in lamentation, oftener
bursts out in invective, against the South, tho
Southern people, and Southern instituaione.
But Air. Bull is not a madman—ho is only a
hypocrite. lie will not indulge in fruutic de
nunciation, one moment after it becomes un
profitable. AV o have listened to bis abuse so
long, that we earnestly desire a change of tunc,
for variety’s sake, if nothing more, and wo
therefore read with pleasure tho follow
ing extract from tho Courier A Enquirer
intimating a change of tunc ore long. Speak
ing, of the Memphis Convention, that paper
soys:
“But there is a third feature, which ns yet
has been but dimly shadowed forth, which “we
regard as the most significant of all. There
will bo an aggressive und defiant element in the
Convention, which will sock to retaliate upon
England for their impertinent and officious in
termeddling with the domestic affairs of a for
eign nation. It will aim to sap the foundation
of her commercial prosperity by destroying her
monopoly of tho cotton trade. Hitherto tho
planters of the’South have been to busy with
their own basinets to attend to any thing
else: but tho constant and bitter abuse of tho
I abolitionists has at length aroused them from
j iheir torpor, and this Convention is tlio first
result of tho spirit of Union and combination
now rapidly growing up among them. Tho
British People are tho special embodiment of
abolition principles and against them the first
attack at tho organized and United South is to
b now made. It may produce no immediate
: re., dt but is pregnant with future consequences.
The cheers that are now ringing through £xe
t-T Hall will impart strength and vigor to this
Memphis movement; and should tho hypocriti
cal tears of the English people be succedt'd by
those of real misery, they would but receive
their due reward.”
‘JfrPP It is not ingratitude, but the spirit of
’ progress which causes so many attempts to be
j made in the present day, upon tho lifo of that
; faithful servant of monkind— steam. Hardly a
| day passes, but we notice in the various papers,
I accounts of sorno invontion, whoso aim is to
j supersede this mighty agent; steam is felt to
; Ijo too costly, not merely in tho pecuniary sense
j of that tenn, but in tho immense sacrifice ofhu-
I man life which it demands of those who use it.
Hot air, compressed air, and electricity, are the
in i.-t prominent substitutes now engaging pub
lic attention. Thefirst,we have little faith in
ns yet, experiment has only demonstrated its
inutility : tho second, is soon to bo tried, with
what success cannot now bo predicted: tho
third, which is most likely we think, to give tho
power coveted, has been subjected to numerous
experiments, which, thus far, have only acted as
incentives to further trial. The last account
which we have had of tho attempts to make
practical use of electricity, is as follows :
The Providence Journal says that consid* ra
hlc interest has been felt in that community,
j in the progress of an invention from which its
j friends except the greatest results. Mr. Car
penter, an ingenious and studious, but wholly
sell-educated man, who has given much atten
tion to tho subject of magnetism, and to its ap
plication as a motive power, is the inventor.
He has so far obtained the confidence of those to
whom he has communicated his plans, that he has
! raised a sufficient sum, several thousand dollars,
to construct a machine to test the invention. He
j has succeeded in producing a continuous cur
| rent of electricity, and has applied it with sat-
I isfactory results to a small machine, and is now
constructing one of six horse power.
The rapid increase of the Mormons, and
tho ease and rapidity with which they build
oities, found colonies, etc., has been a frequent
subject of remark. A correspondent of tho N.
V. Times, writing from Salt Lake City, givos
the following explanation of the apparent mar
vel
**\l ithout detracting in tho least from tho 1
enterprise of tho saints in this respect, I will j
say, that any other body of Anglo-Saxon farm
ers, mechanics, artisans and laborers, (of equal i
numbers) would have effected quite as much, if |
not more, in the same length of time. I think
the same number of Shakers would have effect
ed moro because the amount which has been
spent in support of the priesthood and their
harems, would have gone in a more useful direc
tion. Tho whole marvel lies in two facts—
First, that the entire community were trans
ferred here at once, without waiting for the
tedious process of a gradual settlement. And
second, all theirenergies, stimulated by religious
enthusiasm, have been measurably directed by
a single will. The real miracle consists in so
large a body of men and women, in the nine
teenth century, being governed and controlled
| by such gross religious imposture.’’
Muscogee Superior Court.
I Our Superior Court resumed its session on
yesterday, after a r.*< * s.s of three weeks, occa
j sioned By unavoidable Providential causes.
Hut little of the heavy business of tho term has,
as y< t, been disposed of, and a frightful a
mount of labor presents itself to tho presiding
; judge, on the civil and criminal dockets. Tho
judge’s duties, so far as they relate to thiscoun
i ty.are extremely onerous, and wo heartily coin
; cide with him in tho views expressed in liis
J opening charge, at the commencement of the
| court, that there should be a separate tribunal
;in this county, at least, for the trial of criminals
1 Our jail is loaded down, so to spenk, to the
hatches with every grade of offenders, whilst
; an immense amount of civil business calls for
: early attention. This business has accumula
ted for years, and it is time it should bo dispo
sed of. And yet tjic judge, under the circum
stances, is’powerlesß to perform so Herculean a
! ta.-k. His labors must be divided, or the justice
’ of the county must go unadministered. Tho
j labor of tho court in tins singlqcounty, amounts
I B> more than that of many of the circuits in tho
I State. If there is a remedy, let it bo applied.

Tlie Age of Progms.—ffulck Work.
, And what is this that cnine thus wrapped up
’ and labeled? It is a pair of pantaloons made
in t-n minutes by a sewing machine, in Now
Orleans, and sent t<i us as a specimen by Col.
Maunscl White of that city. The goods were
; l nan lilac tu red by the Eagle Manufacturing
fyompnni/, of this city, and is pronounced by the
Colonel as the very yarn for comfort and ser
vice on western plantations. The sewing is
: done in a style of strength and elegance scarce
; ly to be excelled by the most accomplished seam-
I stress.
By tho way it may not be out of place here to
| remark that the Eagle Factory Company expects
| to recommence work on next week, the damago
to their establishment being thoroughly and
1 permanently repaired. Our mills and facto
| l ies will we learn, be all in operation again in
j a short time, when there will boa bountiful
j supply ofthe needful to clothe tho outer, and
strengthen the inner man. Floods and fires
, and storms have, within a few years, done much,
j damage to our city ; but tho industry, energy
i and enterprise of our people have well nigh ob
| literated the marks ofthe ruin. A brighter day
j begins to dawn upon our prospects. Our eue
| inies have proved false prophets, and our city
I stands this day in a more commanding altitude
| than she ever before enjoyed. If you doubt it,

SAVANNAH JOURNAL, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8, L 853.
jsff- The Arctic was rocently beaten by the
Arabia, to the intense gratification of tho Eng
lish in America, who still remember the yacht
race at Cowes. We fear that this triumph of
tho Arabia’s will lead to unpleasant results. A
New Y’ork paper intimates them in the follow
ing paragraph :
The Arctic, to-day, has had hor funnel taken
out and workmen are busy about the ongine,
but whether to make repairs, or increase speed,
of course we outsiders don’t know. Tbe>story
is, however, that “the Arctio can bo beaten by
the Arabia, but once.”
‘Put that and that together,” and draw your
own inferences.
Tho Express alluding to tho same fact, pre

Albany contemporary calls “Preparations for a
grand homicidal demonstration on the Atlan
tic.”
