i Spain, by which English cruisers are permit
, I ‘d to land men to search the plantations of
Cuba, on which slaved are suspected to have

which tho English Government offers to with- j
draw her cruisers from tho Coast of Cuba, and ‘
permit any number of slaves to be landed, pro- I
j vided they shall be made Einancipados for ten 1
; years, and that slavery shall be abolished in
f ho Island at the expiration of fifty years. The 1
.New \ork Times says that the nbovo is con

i dated October 1, which state that .Air. Crawford, !
; the English Consul there, was procuring letters
from prominent persons urging this plan, in
i order to send to England to fortify her in her
j demands on Spain. No British cruisers had
J I 'o**ll on the coast for a month, and slaves were
landing in crowds.

A Serious Affray.
°n Monday night last, between 11 and 12
o’clock, a difficulty occurred in Berrcsford-st., !
on the premises of one Win. Nelson, (Tavern
keeper,) who was assailed by Joseph Williams.
It appears that Williams entered the yard of
i Nelson, and used exoiting language, whereupon
the latter procured a carving knife, which was
nigh to hand, and used it with effect upon Wil
liams, cutting him severely about the head and
j body. During the affray Williams drew a re- .
volver and discharged two loads, (one with of
i feet,) upon the body of Nelson. Ono of the
1 balls entered tho right breast, about an inch
above the nipple, passing down to the point of
the right shoulder blade, from whence it was
extracted by Drs. Brailsford and Alitchidl.
Williams was taken to the Guard House,
, where Dr. Pettigrew dressed his wounds. Both
; parties, we learn, are regarded out of danger.

A recent writer gives some interesting par
-1 ticulars upon this subject:
‘•ln twelve years, about five hundred million
of dollars wr re raised by thjs house for differ
: cut powers, by way of loan or subsidy, which
were distributed in nearly the following pro- j
portions: For England,, two hundred millions;
i tor Austria, fifty millions; for Prussia, forty mil
lions: for France, eighty millions: for Naples,:
fifty millions; for Russia twenty-five millions:
for several German courts, four millions; for Brn
i zil, twelve millions; exclusive of various other
large sums. The remarkable success of the !
Rothschilds, setting aside the great opportuni
lies which they havo enjoyed from favorable ,
circumstances, may be attributed to their strict
adherence to two fundamental maxims. The ;
first, in compliance with the dying injunctions I
of tlm founder of the house, is the conducting
:ot all their operations entirely in common. Ev- !
cry proprosition of magnitude made to one of
them is submitted to the deliberations of all. i
No project is adopted until thus fully discussed, !
1 and it is then executed by united efforts. A so
j eond principle is, not to aim at exorbitant pro
fits, to set definite limits to every operation, !
and, so far as human prudence and foresight
can do, to render it iudcpemUitit of accidental
| influences. In this maxim lies one of the main |
secrets Os tbc strength.”
