Troops to Teachers' program launched
U.S. Senator Sam Nunn and
State Labor Commissioner David
Poythress today announced the
launch of a $883,000 federally
funded program to recruit and train
veterans to become teachers as they
re-enter civilian life.
The undertaking, an adjunct of
the national "Troops to Teachers"
program, will be administered by
the Georgia Department of Labor in
conjunction with the U.S.
Department of Defense and the U.S.
Department of Labor's Office of
Veterans Employment and Training
Services.
Nunn, who was instrumental in
winning congressional approval of
the program, said, "Public schools
are our first line of defense in the
fight for global markets, and our
students can clearly benefit from
people with skills learned in the
military."
The senator added, "Many of
these individuals have been
instructors in the military. I am
confident that they can adapt their
leadership skills to the civilian
teaching environment, well
qualified teachers and the nation
will be made stronger as a result"
The pilot program will be
developed and administered by the
National Consortium for
Educational Access, Inc., (NCEA)
through a contract with the Georgia
Department of Labor. Nine other
states are expected to participate.
They are New York,
Maryland, Arizona, Colorado,
Illinois, Kentucky, Florida and
Louisiana. Plans are eventually to
expand the program to all 50 states
and Puerto Rico.
The project outline calls for
NCEA to match trainees with
colleges in states where they would
like to teach and provide counseling
on courses needed for certification.
State and local boards of education
will be asked to project their needs
and, when matches are found, to add
applicants to their lists of incoming
teachers.
Dr. Leroy Ervin, president of
NCEA, said, "This partnership will
make a difference in the lives of
many Americans-in our dedicated
servicemen, in our educational
centers and in our children."
Albert Conte, principal deputy
undersecretary of defense, said,
"This program takes the knowledge,
leadership skills, experience and
character of our military men and
women and injects these role
models into our schools across the
country. In the end, both the
military and civilian communities
are better served because of this
program."
A candidate will be required to
have a bachelor's degree, six years
of continuous military service and
an honorable discharge. Non-
