District Building Authority and the mystery surrounding the Board's
"Creative Financing Plan”, given the potential for a significant number of
special interests to have influenced the Board's decision, and given the
blatantly arrogant attitude demonstrated by the Board toward the Concerned

others, I simply do not know what to believe.

The subject of outer space not

nuts.
For example, there is one riddle

Personally, I think knowing that
I'll never be as financially secure as
my parents and that the chances of
my daughter becoming as finan

slim is very depressing.
And it's not just the fact that

Everything is surrounded by
something. The earth is surrounded
by outer space. My question:
Outer space, we are told, goes on
for billions of miles and I want to
know what is around outer space?
And then what is around whatever
i? around outer space? On and on.
The more you think about it the
more it boggles your mind.
Nobody has been able to give me
an answer to this riddle. I wish
someone could.
Meanwhile, I'll just keep my

somewhere between 300 and 350
tickets for the event.
In addition to a cash bar and
heavy hors d’oeuvres, entertainment
for next weekend’s ball will be pro
vided by The Jesters, a sixties band
that has performed with a multitude
of hit recording artists from Marvin
Gaye and Patty Laßelle to The
Platters and Jackie Wilson.
A full band of guitars, basses,
drums, keyboards and a five piece
horn and woodwind section, the
band is guaranteed to thrill the audi
ence with their own renditions of
hit songs from the fifties and six
ties.
For a preview sampling of The
Jesters’ music, Balvaunuca member
Dawn Kyle suggests that those in
terested tune in to to WDEN Radio.
“WDEN will be playing some of
the Jesters’ tracks following our
commercials for the ball,” Kyle said
this week.
Dress for this year’s ball is
black-tie optional.

Purple Martins need good Perry homes
Attention birdwatchers, the
Department of Natural Resources,
Nongame-Endangered Wildlife
Program is challenging you to
attract purple martins to your
backyard.
Residing in Georgia from spring
through early fall, the purple martin
is a songbird which is highly
dependent on man for its habitat.
Both old and young martins live in
structures built by man for nesting
purposes. While older martins will
return year after year to the same
nesting sites, young birds seek to
occupy new structures.
A first wave of older purple
martins known as scouts began
arriving in Georgia in early to mid-
February. These birds almost
always return to the same place

where they nested the year before.
People wanting to erect new
structures for the purple martin will
be trying to attract those birds bom
last year who will be first-time
nesters. These young birds who
arrive three to four weeks after the
scouts, should be showing up any
day now looking for fresh new
places to nest and raise their young.
Although attracting these birds
to your backyard may be difficult,
recent research findings may help
increase your chances of attracting
martins. There are several types of
housing that you can construct to
attract nesting martins: these
structures range from houses made
from natural gourds to the most
common "apartment" style houses.
Here are some tips you should

know for attracting purple martins
to your backyard:
•houses should be erected in an
open area
•houses should be situated
within 30 yards of a building
•the height of the houses has no
effect on martin nesting
•martins show no preference
between wood and aluminum
houses
•houses should be painted light
colors
•houses should not be cleaned;
purple martins prefer to nest in
structures still containing nests
built the previous year
•houses need a pinch of sulfur
dust to control mites
•when the martins leave in early
fall, entry holes should be plugged
to deter invading birds; the
entrances should be unplugged in
mid-March or early April.
