The Westfield tennis team took a

Academy Monday in preparation for
the region tournament.
The women's team was helped
by two forfeits in singles play, and
one forfeit in doubles play. Marla
Massey defeated Mackenzie Vaughn

Ellerbee 8-0.
Number eight player Laura Pear

Brett had singled in the second
after Waldrip walked and stole sec

the plate on a great throw from cen

That would be Perry's only
scoring threat until the seventh in
ning.
Brett paced the Panther offense
with two hits, including a triple.

other Perry team had ever done

Freshman Richie Gill lead the
way with five goals as his team
knocked off Vidalia for the second
time this year, 8-1 Monday night.
"Granted, Vidalia isn't exactly a
strong soccer team," Panther coach
Carl Thomas admitted "But, at this
point, every victory means some
thing. "
Despite the lack-luster competi
tion, the Panthers are racking up an
impressive winning streak, outscor

combined score of 12-2.

four big runs to give Staines a
cushion.
Talton who had kept the Mus

five innings, solidified the Hornet
lead with a two run single to left.
"It wasn't pretty; but, they did
what they had to do to win the
game," said Brown.

had started the seventh with a single
to center, advancing to second on a
wild pitch.
However, it seemed that Yawn
was going to stay at third as the
next two batters in the Perry order
struck out. However, Brett hit a
drive into the right-center gap, to
score Yawn. When the play was
over, Brett stood at third. He scored
on Tim Allen's flair single to right
center.
But, the Perry lead was short
lived as Appling scored two in the
bottom of the seventh to force extra
innings.
to Sara Butler 8-4, after being down
6-1.
"Laura (Pearson) did a good job
to come back and get three games,"
said tennis coach Jenney Crooms.
"I thought Rupal (Patal) played ex
tremely well."
Leslie Davis combined with Su
sanna Turner to defeat the team of
Butler and Ellerbee 8-1. The Hor
nets almost won the second doubles
match, with the team of Cindy
Dunnaway and Katie Davidson be
ing edged by Vaughn and Hines, 8-
13.37 seconds.
Smith was also a part of the 400
meter relay team which finished
third and the 1600 meter relay team
which came in the sixth. Joining
Smith on the two relay teams were
Jennifer Lane, Wendy Biggers and
fourth inning single.
Waldrip walked three, struck out
11, gave up three hits and one
earned run in his final game as a
Panther. The senior is expected to
play college baseball, with several
scholarship offers on die table.
Coach Jones said, "Our kids could
have folded the tent after the 4-0
deficit I’m proud of them for that
seventh inning. It says something
kind about them."
4-5 on the year; but, they will still
have a hard time getting into the
playoffs with a 2-5 Region 2AAA
record.
"I don't expect us to make the
playoffs," freshman fullback Daniel
Wright said, "but if we continue to
play like a team, and we can win
the rest of our games, we’ve at least
got a shot."
The Panthers played another
road game last night in Jordan and
will host Pacelli tomorrow before
traveling to Brookstone Friday for
their regular season finale.
Thomas does says that they do
have some momentum going into
the final days of the season.

For the second time, Brett had
the chance for the winning run.
Once again. Bred delivered for the
Panthers, hitting a single to center.
The ball rolled through the
centerfielder's legs and to the fence,
allowing Waldrip to score from first
and giving the Panthers the bo
lead.
Brett, who was one inning sny
of his inning limit for the week,
went back on the mound in the
bottom of the 13th. The junior shut
down the Pirates in the final
inning, allowing only a harmless
single with two outs.

3200 meter run. Julee Fryer came
in sixth in the shot put with a
throw of 27 feet, 9 inches. Barr had
a fifth with a triple jump of 28 feet,

Catherine Walker ran the metric

sixth.
In men's competition, Matt
Shepley finished the 100 meter dash
with a time of 11.90 seconds, good
enough for fifth. Lon Talton and
Tom Newberry took third and
fourth in the 800 meter run. Talton
finished the run with a time of
2:10, eight seconds in front of
Newberry.
The men's 400 meter relay team
came in fourth with a time of 46.68
inches.
"We're playing with a lot more
confidence now," said Thomas.
"We're not exactly playing better,
we’re just cutting back on the mis
takes."
In their victory over Vidalia, Gill
scored the first two goals of the
game followed by a score by senior
Boris Nedev. Brian Mourning also
got in the action by putting two
points on the scoreboard.
Sophomore goalie Derrick Webb
continues to improve as he held the
Indians to a mere one goal in two
match-ups.
"We're actually starting to play
like a team," senior fullback Robert
Bowers said of his team.
