Jones said that the team's not

disappointing.

Jones said. "We were one game be

young players, and they made

to be the fourth team from the re

years that we did not make the
playoffs. It would have been very
gratifying to make the playoffs re
gardless of what would have hap
pened afterwards.
"Overall, we played about like
the team that we were. I was
pleased with some spots and disap
pointed in other spots. It was one
of those seasons where we had to
take some lumps.”
Jones said that the team would
Tarvis Felton ran the 1500 meter

Rickevia Jackson in the 800 meter

use the money in their fund to meet
normal expenses.
The NCAA wants to maintain
the image of the student-athlete.
However, it is becoming increas
ingly difficult to maintain that dif

"When we were at 2-11," he said, "I
thought that there was a possibility
that we might not win another
game."
But, the Hornets turned the sea
son around, winning six of their
next 10 games. The only team to
outclass the Hornets in the second
half of the season was state cham
pion Stratford, which beat the Hor
nets late in the regular season 20-0,
and knocked them out of the play
offs with a 16-0 triumph.
Talton led the second half resur
gent, winning five of the last 10
games, and getting most of his
RBIs in those games. Brown said
that he had a talk with his senior
pitcher.
"Lon had a lot of pressure to per
form early in the season.," said
Brown, who noted that Talton was
hitting in the number four slot de
spite the fact that he did not have
"clean-up" power. "I told him to re
lax, try to play and have a good
time. To a certain extent the talk
worked."
"We got off to a slow start," said
Brown. "We were just so inexperi
enced that it took the better part of
14-to-15 games for a lot of the kids
to reach the point where they could
play and succeed on the varsity
level.
"Even though we had a lot of
seniors," said Brown, "they did not
have a lot of playing time."
Next year, the Hornets will be
much younger, with just two ju
niors, Jake Wells and Michael
Davis, from this year's team be
coming seniors. Brown will have
four other players back from the '94
team: Matt Shipley, Greg Adams,
Brian Staines and Keith Waites.
However, Brown said the Hor
nets had a lot of good players com
ing up from the "B" team to go
along with the players he had re
turning. "We are going to be com
petitive next year," he said.
be better off in the future after the
1994 season. "I’m really looking
forward to next year," he said.
"Without a doubt, we will be much
better skill-wise, stronger and know
more about the game. We will have
a lot more confidence going out and
playing."
The Panthers will lose only one
player to graduation from this year’s
team. However, that player,
Waldrip, will be hard to replace.
Waldrip led the team in batting,
hitting .410, homeruns with five
and RBIs with 30. "He had an ex
ceptional year," said Jones. "He did
a good job on the mound. He was
the victim (pitching) in some of the
games we did not win."
Waldrip is being recruited by
several colleges, including several
NCAA Division I schools. Cur
rently, he is looking at Liberty
University, but will not make a de
cision until after the Georgia Ex
travaganza All-Star tournament at
Kennesaw College.
Everybody else returns.
Pitching was shallow for the
Panthers in 1994. Two of the three
pitchers that Jones had this year
will be returning. Jones added that
some of the pitchers who saw spot
duty on the varsity team and "B"
team will see more innings next
year. The pitching staff will also be
helped if a player who could not
play because of eligibility problems
returns.
