Red Cross
looking for
new donors
The American Red Cross is
looking for "Super Summer
Heroes" this summer to help save
lives by giving blood at a time
when donations typically decline.
Between 900 and 1,000 heroes are
needed each weekday just to meet
the day-to-day demands of nearly
100 hospitals in the 85-county
Southern region.
To encourage people to give
blood this summer, the Red Cross
has launched a donor recruitment
campaign called "Be A Super
Summer Hero."
"Collections generally start
dropping around Memorial Day in
May, and continue to fall
throughout the summer until Labor
Day," said Beth V. Greenberg, chief
operating officer of American Red
Cross Blood Services, Southern
region. "This happens because
schools are closed, people go on
vacation, and have more active
lifestyles. Consequently, donating
blood often becomes a lower
priority with many people, yet the
need for blood is constant"
Greenberg said that the Red
Cross is encouraging people to
donate blood during the summer
months to help prevent a shortage
such as occurred nationally in
January.
"When blood donations decline,
we are forced to use our emergency
reserves of blood to keep hospital
blood banks at a safe level for
routine surgeries and emergencies,"
Mrs. Greenberg said. "After a few
days of lower than needed
collections, the reserves become
depleted and we have a crisis. This
happened in January when we had
no units of Types O and B in
reserve for a few days, and hospitals
had very few units of those types in
stock. We don't want that to
happen this summer."
Mrs. Greenberg said that most
people will donate blood if they
know of a specific need, or if they
hear that blood is in short supply.
"Yet every day, every hour,
serious need for blood exists," she
said. "Many people who use a lot
of blood are accident victims or
emergency surgery patients. Those
people must have blood available
when they arrive at the emergency
troom. It takes at least 24 hours to
test and process blood before it can
be sent to hospitals for transfusion.
People in emergency situations
can't wait 24 hours. The blood has
got to be on the hospital shelves
before a serious need arises."
Most people who are in good
health, who are at least 17 years old
and who weigh at least 110 pounds
can give blood. The entire process,
from registration to refreshments,
takes a little more than an hour. A
person cannot bet AIDS or any
other disease by giving blood. The
process is safe, and the needles,
tubes and bags are sterile and used
only once before being destroyed.
Donors can give blood every 56
days.
For information about giving
blood, or for blood drive locations,
donors can call the American Red
Cross chapter in their community,
or call the Red Cross in Atlanta at
(404) 881-0668, extension 261.
