Davis and Christy named to Boys State
Keith Davis and Sean Christy
have been selected to represent
Westfield Schools at Boys State
this summer, June 12-18, on the
Georgie Southern University
campus.
The American Legion sponsors
the annual program which is
intended to develop pride in civic
leadership and American
citizenship, as well as to foster an
understanding of our American
Traditions and Belief in the United
States of America
Keith is the son of Bobby and
Jean Davis of Kathleen. Sean is
the son of John and Marsha Christy
of Perry.
The first Boys State was
conducted at the Illinois State
Fairgrounds, Springfield, Illinois,
in June 1935. It was formed to
counter the Fascist inspired
Young Pioneer Camps of the
19305, where boys of high school
age were being taught that
democracy had outworn its use
fulness and should be replaced by a
new form of government, namely
Fascism.
Now, fifty-nine years later, the pro
gram is still providing that oppor

doing. Upon arrival, the citizens
are assigned to one of two political

parties, the "Nationalists" or
"Federalists". They are in no way
reflections of the two major politi
cal parties in American govern
ment, but are established to allow
instrucion and participation in the
two party system of government.
An effective political system is
created in each Boys State to
operate from the precinct level
through the State committee:
Precinct, City, County, Judicial
Circuit, Senatorial or Legislative
Distriict and The Boys State.
The government organization
provides for such features as: city
county and state elections; party
caucuses and/or conventions;
keynote speeches, platform devel
opment, organization of component
units such as senatorial districts,
judicial districts and legislative
committees; and local functional
government units such as County
Boards, agencies or courts.
Planned, supervised recreation is
an important part of most Boys
States and many programs feature
athletic contests that lead to
championships among the cities or
counties. Additionally, many Boys
States form their own musical
bands and choirs under the
supervision of a recognized director
