State patrol encourages ‘walk this way’
More than 30 percent of all
pedestrian fatalities and injuries in
Georgia in 1993 involved children
14 years of age and under, according
to the Georgia State Patrol.
Officials at AAA Auto Club
South urge motorists to remember
that now school is out of session
for the summer, to be aware of the
increase in numbers of children
playing near or on roadways.
"Both parents and motorists need
to do their part to protect our
children during these summer
months," said Randy Bly, director
of traffic safety for AAA Auto Club
South.
Parents can do their part in
keeping their children safe by
teaching, demonstrating and
practicing the "Seven Tips for Safe
Walking." "Remember that
children imitate both safe and
unsafe behaviors, so parents need to
set a positive example," Bly said.
The Seven Tips for Safe Walking
include:
1. Keep from between
parked cars. Many children are
struck each year in non-intersection
accidents when they suddenly enter
the roadway from between parked
cars.
2. Be extra alert in bad
weather. Cars cannot stop as fast
on wet pavement, or vehicles may
skid. Because motorists and
pedestrians tend to hurry to escape
the bad weather, they may not be
paying close attention to their
surroundings. Motorists and
pedestrians need to be extra alert
when the weather is bad.
3. Be seen at night. Have
your children wear light-colored or
white clothing if they will be

show that motorists do not expect
children to cross at midblock and
tend to slow down at intersections
because they expect to see
pedestrians cross there.
