Houston County Commission candidates participating In Devonwood’s recent forum were (I
--r) Jim Carter, Nora Reese-Laughlln, Billy Hunter, Jack Wylam, Randy Wynn and Wayne
Ragln.
Forum, from 1 A
speakers’ podium were Republican
James Carter of Kathleen, Democrat
Billy Hunter of Bonaire, Democrat
Ronald Wayne Ragin of Perry and
Republican Nora Reese Laughlin,
Republican John F. “Jack” Wylam
and Democrat Randy E. Wynn, all
of Warner Robins.
During the forum each candidate
was given five minutes apiece for
personal campaigning afterwhich
the floor was opened up for a brief
question and answer session
between the Devonwood residents
in attendance and the candidates.
During this session a number of
primary concerns surfaced and were
addressed by the candidates, the is
sues seemingly nearest and dearest
to the Devonwood population’s
heart being the need for more
planning and zoning for county
subdivisions and the need for more
law enforcement county-wide.
Having worked closely with the
Houston County Sheriff’s Depart
ment over the past year in estab
lishing the subdivision’s Neighbor
hood Watch program, one resident
said that she has discovered that the
geographic areas assigned to the sh
eriff s deputies on patrol are just
too large to be handled.
“There just isn’t any way they
can do it all,” the lady resident said.
“I think we need additional law en
forcement patrol staff and I hope
that whoever is elected will address
that.”
In answering this concern, each
candidate agreed and pointed out that
the new $20.5 million county bud
get which was to be approved at
this Tuesday morning’s meeting of
the county commission is to in
clude money for the hiring of addi
tional deputies for the coming fiscal
year.
On the issue of planning and
zoning, one male resident indicated
that he felt perhaps there had not
been enough control taken by the
county and its planning and zoning
commission when the Devonwood
neighborhood was built.
The resident indicated that, if the

gram.
Coordinated and collaborative efforts are encouraged. Application deadline
is Friday, Aug. 12 at 5 p.m.

county government had been more
proactive in approving plans for the
subdivision, perhaps they wouldn’t
now be having problem with a
neighborhood road which blocks the
area’s natural drainage and which
“essentially dams up water”.
“When we bought this property,
we had no reason to wonder whether
or not it was properly laid out,” the
resident said, drawing nods of
agreement from much of the
audience. “I’m not for the govern-
